Essential Question

Read chapter 6 of Lord of the Flies.

In groups of three, answer the questions below. For each question, one person should be a "scribe." The scribes role is to take notes of what the other two group members discuss. The scribe should change for each question. Please be sure to include textual evidence in your responses.

Question One: Chapter 5 ends with Ralph saying (to Piggy and Simon) that he wished the world of adults would send them a message. “If only they could get a message to us. If only they could send us something grown up . . . a sign or something” (Golding, 52).

At the beginning of Chapter 6, something does arrive on the island from the adult world.

What is it? What do you think the significance of this figure is?

Question Two: On page 56, how would you describe Jack’s views of democracy and leadership?

Question Three: The “castle” is not a real castle. It’s just a rock formation and cliff at one side of the island. By calling it a castle, how are the boys characterized?

Question Four: Why do you think Jack wouldn’t let Ralph look for the beast in the “castle” on his own? Why do you think he ran after him to join?
