NEXT LESSON, you will have a timed essay assessment.
You will be given a list of between seven to ten essay questions or prompts. You pick ONE.
You will then have around 15 minutes to plan your essay and 60 minutes to write your essay. However, it is up to you how you use your time.
You will be graded on content, specifically your interpretation of the text in relation to the question or prompt you have chosen. You will also be graded on your writing; particularly you will be graded on your ability to write a strong thesis statement, body claims and relate statements, your ability to select the best evidence as well as contextualise and embed cited evidence, AND your three-tier analysis of evidence.
You will have the option of writing your essay by hand or typing it on a computer in class.
The essay is open-book, meaning you can bring notes and an annotated copy of the text.
On your laptop, you must close all other desktops and only have your internet browser open. You may have up to four tabs open on your browser. These tabs are limited to Google Docs (where you will write your essay, if not by hand), Google Classroom, your Google Slides notes (which you will gather today), and your Consider This questions/Analysis table work (one tab at a time).
Thus, I suggest that, today, you carefully gather notes and evidence in order to be fully prepared for the essay next lesson.
Use the slides provided to gather all notes for your essay in the following class.
Remember, per section/slide, you are allowed a maximum of 10 bullet points.
In pairs, each create an essay question about ONE of the the five topics:
Plot
Character
Setting
Symbol
Context
Use the following words in your question:
Either “WHY” or “HOW”
Either “CREATE,” “DEVELOP,” or “USE”
Think of a thesis statement which answers the question and write it.
Consider what each body topic might be and write three body claims.
EXTENSION: If you have time, consider the evidence you would use to support those claims.
Swap your work with your peer.
Grade each other's work and provide feedback.
