Read chapter 5 of Lord of the Flies.

In groups of three, answer the questions below. For each question, one person should be a "scribe." The scribes role is to take notes of what the other two group members discuss. The scribe should change for each question. Please be sure to include textual evidence in your responses.

Question One: The novel takes a third-person omniscient point of view, able to swap between characters. In this chapter, the narration highlights Ralph’s thought processes. What is significant about this and how has Ralph changed?

Question Two: What points does Ralph make at the meeting? What general point does he make that he wants people to discuss? Why are these points so important or significant?

Question Three: Why are the rules so important to Ralph? What are the consequences of breaking them?

Question Four: What does Simon say about the beast, and what do you think he means? How does everyone else react to what he says?
