Community service is another cornerstone of my philosophy of education. I hope that my students all see an importance in serving their community.
A major component of Ed Rising is service, so the club maintains a great focus on it.
Most of our community service is done in Rockcastle County primarily through the elementary schools and the middle school. With those programs, both the Educators Rising Club and the High School Academic Team teach classes, host workshops, and tutor and mentor the younger students throughout the year.
In 2021, we were able to branch out with our service as we raised over $1700 for West Whitesburg Elementary School and we were even lucky enough to be able to deliver those supplies to the teachers there. Also on that trip, we helped Whitesburg Middle School teachers prepare for their first day of school in February 2023.
At Lincoln County High School in 2023, I piloted a new club through 4-H. We call it the 4-H Service Club and our entire focus is on helping our community and the world. So far, we have created over 300 dog chew toys for local animal shelters, over 100 no-sew blankets for hospices patients and worked to clean and beautify our local cemetery. Students also must obtain at least fifty hours of community service on their own to qualify for an end-of-the-year trip to New Orleans to volunteer with the Restoring Hope in New Orleans (RHINO) community service group building new homes and repairing damaged ones that are still in disrepair from Hurricane Katrina which hit the city almost twenty years ago.
