“I do believe in the power of story. I believe that stories have an important role to play in the formation of human beings, that they can stimulate, amaze, and inspire their listeners.”
~director Hiyao Miyazaki
For Diploma credit in the course, HL and SL students must complete and submit passing Assessments, according to the IB Film Guide (2023). All materials will be based on and/or taken directly from the IB Film Guide (2023). A candidate's final grade towards their IB Diploma is determined entirely by their performance on their IAs and EAs. For the differentiated percentage breakdown for SL and HL classes, please refer to pages 51-52 of the IB Film Guide (2023).
Internal Assessments (or IAs) are exam projects that are completed, submitted to the instructor, and graded in the course by the instructor, and then submitted online to the IB Programme to be moderated by other graders from around the world. The two Internal Assessments are the Production Portfolio and Reel, and the Collaborative Film Project.Â
External Assessments (or EAs) are exam projects that are completed and submitted to the IB Programme to be graded by other moderators from around the world. The two External Assessments are the Textual Analysis and the Comparative Study.

Students in the class for Year 2 will complete all the Assessments as part of the course, even if they are not taking the course for Diploma status. Candidates will be allowed formal class time to complete certain elements of each Assessment, but will also be expected to complete them on their own time as homework.

This links to a .pdf copy of an IB resource that describes the various methods in which a student in the programme can effectively cite their sources in their IAs and EAs, in whatever formal citation method that they have chosen. One necessary element for any and all citation styles in the EAs and IAs is consistency: regardless of the style chosen, the candidate must use the same methods throughout each individual Assessment. For the Film course, critical visual sources are as valid as scholarly written sources, and should be cited.
