Dante and Virgil in Hell, Eugène Delacroix (1822)
We analyze things every day in ways that we often don't recognize formally: it may be using inductive or deductive reasoning, or even something more personal and deep. In class, we will use a process known as "explication," a collegiate-level, step-by-step system to analyze 100% of all media you encounter (the media can be written or performed or sung or crafted or filmed or painted, etc.). The process depends on your continued learning and acquirement of knowledge, either as a result of continued formal education or training, or even just as a hobby. Review the notes here and reflect on the uses of Explication in your own life.
When using any logic in your reasoning and argument, keep in mind that many times there are missteps and errors that can be used to arrive at erroneous conclusions. Sometimes these errors are accidental and sometimes these errors are purposefully used. Logical fallacies, or misuses of logic in error, are insidious in how deeply ingrained they are in popular culture.
Crash Course - Interpreting Literature
This excellent series of videos is hosted and maintained by the Crash Course Youtube channel, and explores some of the most integral and resonant pieces of literature in the history of the written word. Just as we study methods of analysis in class (i.e. like the process of Explication), keep an open mind and explore alternate perspectives on some of your favorite novels, poems, plays, and other exemplars of the written word.
