Born in Hamamatsu, a small industrial city located between Tokyo and Osaka, Ōshiro studied design at Hamamatsu Technical School where he was later to teach, as he did at Hamamatsu First High School for 15 years. He exhibited with, and was a member of, Dōdosha (a sōsaku-hanga society founded in 1929) and Nihon Hanga Kyōkai (Japan Print Association) and was a member of Sōsaku-Hanga Kyōkai founded in Osaka around 1976. By 1953 he had moved to Kyoto where he established himself as a dyeing and weaving designer. While only a minor figure in sōsaku hanga circles, both the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Art hold one of his prints in their collections.

Ōshiro Sadao Print Exhibition at the Hamamatsu Municipal Museum of Art - March 5 until April 3, 2019

Ōshiro Sadao was a printmaker born in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. He studied at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts, and later became a member of the Japan Print Association and the Kyoto Print Association. Oshiro's work is characterized by its lyrical depiction of nature, and he often used motifs from his hometown of Hamamatsu, such as Mt. Fuji and Lake Hamana. He also produced prints of Kyoto's cityscape, such as his 1952 work "Yasaka Shrine, Gion."

Oshiro's prints have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Japan and abroad, and his work is held in the collections of museums and galleries around the world. He was awarded the Japan Print Association Prize in 1951 and the Kyoto Print Association Prize in 1953.

This exhibition features a selection of Oshiro's prints from the 1950s and 1960s, including his early works depicting Hamamatsu and his later works depicting Kyoto. It is a wonderful opportunity to see the work of this talented printmaker.
