About This Print

Yamagishi traveled the world on behalf of the Japanese government from 1926 to 1929 studying print techniques and giving demonstrations of Japanese print techniques in the fifteen countries he visited, including Mexico. As he travelled he made sketches for the subsequent woodblock prints that would make up the series One Hundred Views of the World. Apparently, see below, he also bought postcards as reminders of his travels and, at least for this print, one of those post card images found itself re-purposed.

c. 1910 postcard serving as the model for this print's portrayal of a woman hat and basket seller in Ensenada.
