About This Print

Spending fifteen years in France, Oka was heavily influenced by the Post-Impressionist painters. This posthumous print, after his original painting (shown below), was part of Volume 2 of the "Okanosuke Oka Woodblock Print Collection," published by the Katō Print Institute in 1973. However, this print does not show any publisher's mark, as do the editioned prints (150 prints) in the "Woodblock Print Collection," in the lower right margin, suggesting it is trial or proof print.

While it is said that Oka's works are not depictions of actual scenes, this print bears a fair resemblance to a lithograph in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (shown below) by an anonymous 19th century artist titled "Château d'Happegienne."
