Hatsuyama Shigeru 初山滋 (1897-1973)
Primarily known as an illustrator of children's books, Hatsuyama was also a successful sosaku hanga artist. As a young teenager he apprenticed at a fabric dyeing shop, which he did not enjoy. Introduced to the illustrator and woodblock print artist Igawa Sengai (1876-1961) he became one of Sengai's student employees. He would be hired as an illustrator for a children's magazine, which would become his specialty.

Serizawa Keisuke 芹沢銈介 (1895-1984)
"Born into a family of cloth merchants, Serizawa was, literally, born into textiles. His grandfather was a calligrapher and, likely, the inspiration behind Serizawa’s subsequent use of Japanese symbols and Chinese letters in his designs. Early in life, he began painting and aspired to the fine arts. When his family’s financial setbacks dashed these hopes, he enrolled at a design college. After graduating, he began teaching and found work as a commercial designer, two pursuits that followed him for the rest of his life." [1]
A world famous designer, painter, illustrator, dyer, book, paper and print maker, Keisuke Serizawa attracted international attention as early as 1925 for his distinctive Kataezome style, combining Japanese dyeing techniques with those of Okinawan bingata (stencil-dyed textiles.) This he applied with equal success to kimono and fabric patterns, wall hangings, paintings, fans and original prints. Above all, Keisuke Serizawa became a leading artist of 'Mingei' -- which in Japanese generally means folk art.[2]
Keisuke Serizawa was named a Living National Treasure by the Emperor of Japan in 1956 for his distinctive kataezome style.

Sakai Hideo 酒井秀夫 (1902-1981)
Younger brother of bookmaker, hobbyist and author Sakai Tokuo 酒井徳男 (1897-1973). Hideo specialized in tesaishiki hanga (hand colored prints) and is best known for his hand colored prints of folk toys.
Sakai Tokuo 酒井徳男 (1897-1973)
Sakai Tokuo 酒井徳男 (1897-1973) worked for the Tokyo Shinbun for almost thirty years. He was a bookmaker, self-publishing much of his work, hobbyist and author who went by the pen name Suiyōsō Shujin 水曜荘主人. He was the older brother of Sakai Hideo 酒井秀夫 (1902-1981).
