INTRO: This application takes a look at electricity and gas data by census block in Chicago from 2010. It also takes a look at how certain factors such as the building age, building type, population, and neighborhood affect the amount of power usage throughout the year. All of the maps in the visualization are mapview maps and they are used in three different ways: the first is of the Near West Side of Chicago, the next two allow you to compare two different communities across Chicago, and the last map is of Chicago itself. There are also bar graphs and tables to show the total amounts of electricity and gas usage in Chicago. I have chosen to implement bar charts because it is easier to differentiate which month it is and like a line chart, you can see the increase and decrease for all of the months.
You can use the sidebar menu on the left to access each of the visualizations. The "West Side Map" option shows a mapview map of the Near West Side of Chicago, along with a bar chart and table showing the total amounts of electricity and gas for each month of the year. The "Neighborhood Comparisons" options allows you to compare two neighborhoods at a time. The mapview maps are on this page, but the bar charts and tables are on the "Comparison Charts" page since I wanted to have enough room. The map of Chicago is on the "Chicago Map" page.
Sidebar menu for the visualizations
There are many dropdown menus in the visualization, and each visualization has a set of them. The Near West Side map has two for selecting what is shown on the map; the choices are Electricity, Gas, Average Building Age, Building Type, Average Building Height (Stories), and Total Population. The other drop down menu allows you to pick out the month from which the data was recorded.
The Near West Side map with the dropdowns below
The two dropdown menus on the left allow you to pick out any of the 77 communities in Chicago. The defaults are the Near West Side on the left map and the Loop on the right side. There are also two checkboxes each for each map that give the same functionalities as the Near West Side map.

For the Chicago map, there is a dropdown which allows you to show the 10% tracts for the oldest, newest, and tallest buildings, the blocks that use the most electricity and gas over the year, the most population, most occupied percentage, and highest percentage of renters.
