Blog 1. Think Before You Post- September 24, 2021
After joining my first ICT course, I can truthfully admit there is more to using ICT than I thought I already knew. I myself will be learning along the way as I educate others on using ICT effectively. As an educator it is my responsibility to educate students on digital literacy, digital citizenship, and digital identity to ensure they are using ICT safely and to their advantage.
Elements of Digital Literacy, Digital Citizenship and Digital Identity
Do you think before you post or....
... and enter?
Choose how you present your digital identity wisely.
Digital identity, is how one choses to express who they are through platforms of technology and how others will view you. Your digital identity represents who you are as an individual. As an educator, I feel it is important to teach students about their digital identity. It is crucial for a student to be aware of their online identity and how they are choosing to portray themselves. It is important that one is aware that once they hit "enter/publish/upload" it is there for the world to see. If they wish to take what they post back, it is no longer an option and is available for others to access. The most important thing to remember is to "think before you post", because if you post then think, it is already too late. As an educator it is my responsibility to model how one should appropriately portray their online identity.
Why digital literacy/citizenship matters and why I plan to cover it in my classroom.
In following I will interpret my own understanding of each. What does digital literacy and digital citizenship mean to me? Digital literacy/citizenship is how individuals engage with others through the use of technology. It is crucial to teach students how to use technology responsibly in order to communicate as well as be consumers of information provided from others. It is important one can effectively decide whether or not the sites and information they come across are credible. It refers to how one can decipher the meaning and wether something one has read/seen is fact or someones opinion. As many of you may have been told, I know I sure have, that "you can't believe everything you see on the internet". Students must be aware when doing research that just because something may seem credible it may not be a fact. It is also very important to teach students this now a days as social media is a big part of everyones day to day. For example, they need to be aware that just because a photo portrays one thing it does not mean that it is reality, i.e body image, how extravagant their life may seem, how happy someone may look. It is crucial to teach children that they should never compare themselves to others as photos are not always what they seem. People use social media to portray a false reality. It is also important that students are aware that if they are to post videos or pictures or others without consent it may have consequences.Their decision to make the post can take the wrong turn and effect that individuals life negatively. Technology is a powerful tool and is not always used positively. Even if you post it with no bad intentions it doesn't take much for someone to change that. As an educator it is my responsibility to teach my students the nine elements of digital citizenship. A few elements being: how to communicate, proper etiquette, rights and responsibilities etc. It is important to teach others with the same respect you wish to receive, to teach about plagiarism and how to cite others ideas and to protect the health and wellbeing of yourself. And never, I mean never, give out personal information. As an educator it is my responsibility to lead my students to create positive experiences online and make it clear that our actions may have major consequences when we do not use technology properly.
Digital literacy, digital citizenship, and ICT are important to education, but only if they are used properly.
Technology is a great tool but only if it is used effectively. Students must be taught how to decide wether or not a source is credible. Students must be aware that there are many sources available online that is simply someones opinion and that what they are sharing is not facts. It is important to teach students the difference as they will do endless research throughout their years in school. Students need to know how to use technology to their advantage but understand the dangers that come along with it. They need to learn a balance between the benefits and limitations it has to offer. Technology can be used for good but one needs to be aware of the consequences that come along. Not only do they need to learn to respect others it is just as important to respect themselves. Always remember once published, you are giving others permission to access it and there is no way of getting it back. Therefore, choose how you express your online identity wisely.
My envision of using ICT in the classroom.
Living in todays day, and the high demand of ICT, I can guarantee I will be using ICT in all subject areas. ICT is a great tool that can enhance ways of teaching and learning. ICT provides endless opportunities for not only the students but the teachers as well. It can be used in a number of different ways from researching, to making videos for presentations, using for math games, watching Vooks (video books) and many many more ways. Technology is a new and exciting tool that can help students strive. However, before using technology in my classroom I will take my time to ensure that I teach the responsibilities of an ICT user. I will be sure to teach my students how to protect their identity, and the dangers of technology. It is important to me that a student shows me how to properly use technology. Once they understand their rights and responsibilities then I will grant them with permission of using ICT in my classroom. I myself have lots to learn about ICT as it is constantly changing, but I am willing to learn as I go. ICT is a great tool, but only if used properly. Therefore, be sure to "test the waters", and build your knowledge and skills before jumping right in.

Blog 2. ICT Frameworks
Models of Technology Integration - October 4, 2021.
Today's blog will be a reflection on the models of technology integration. The purpose of this blog is how to evaluate the effectiveness a given app is in terms of prompting skills found in education. I will begin by doing an overview of three different models. In following, I will discuss in depth the one that seems most useful for me to model in my classroom.
The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM)
The TIM model is based on research by Dr. James Welsh. This framework is used to provide teachers with ideas on using technology in the classroom to enhance learning strategies. This model compares five interdependent characteristics of "meaningful environments" versus five levels of integration. The model creates a matrix of 25 cells by associating the 5 independent characteristics with the 5 levels of integration. The 5 interdependent characteristics of a meaningful learning environment according to the TIM model are: Active- we want to encourage students to use technology in the classroom to promote effective research by engaging them. Collaborative- explains how technology can be used within the classroom. Constructive- Teaches students how to build their knowledge through technology by adding new information to what they already know. Authentic- Allows for the students to connect their personal life to the real world. Lastly. Goal directed learning- allows students to "think outside of the box" by letting them explore outside of the confinements of the traditional ways of learning.
Triple E Framework
The Triple E Framework was created by Dr. Liz Kolb. The model consists of a 4 different process steps. The four steps are: 1. Define the learning goals. 2. Select the appropriate technology tool for the lesson 3. Allow the students to use the tool you have chosen to become active learners. Allowing them to use the tool will engage the students in the lesson. 4. Connect the lesson to the real world. Purpose of using ICT in a classroom is to connect students with the real world. The purpose of the Triple E Model is to teach educators how to integrate technology into the classroom and how to model the proper use of it to students. The model is used to help teachers decide how well they integrate technology in the classroom and how they can increase its use. This model focuses on how students can use technology to support engagement, enhancement and extensions (shown in diagram). " Diagram Explanation: "In A, no tech integration is happening. In B, we have some engagement using the Tech. In C, we have Enhancement, where the tech is adding some value in various forms In D, the tech allows for Extension of tasks." (Class notes).
SAMR Model
The SAMR Model framework was developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura. This model starts at substitution and works its way through the characteristics. The 4 characteristics of the model are: 1. Substitution 2. Augmentation 3. Modification and lastly, 4. Redefinition. Substitution means to replace the technology that you are currently using to teach with a newer tool. Augmentation means that the new tool you choose to use improves the lesson. One must ask if the change will improve the task versus the old technology used. Modification means that the lesson is redesigned by the use of new technology. You may ask if there is minor or significant changes to the task. And lastly, redefinition means that the task cannot be completed without the addition of technology. Educators must ask if the technology they chose to use allows them to create a new task that was inconceivable before the changes were made.
As a future educator, I find that I relate best to theTriple E Framework Model and believe it is most useful for me in the classroom. It is critical that we as educators engage our students in new learning experiences. I personally feel this framework is teacher friendly as it provides an easy 4 step process to ensure engaging and enhancing learning experiences for their students. Technology is a big part of our day to day experiences and the use of it increases daily. We as humans tend to rely on technology for many different reasons. There is no better way to teach students that using something that they can all use very well. The purpose of this framework is to help teachers measure how well they are integrating technology into the classroom. I feel this framework is a simple way for teachers to make sure that they are integrating enough technology into the classroom without making it hard on themselves. If we as educators can coach ourselves on how to use it properly and effectively I feel it has a great advantage to the learning experiences we can offer out students. Every year technology advances and everything is becoming available online so it is important that we as educators coach ourselves and our students. When using the Triple E model 3 questions to always have in the back of our mind while planning to integrate technology into our lessons are: 1. Does the technology used create new opportunities for the students? 2. Does the technology allow for the students to strengthen their understanding of the content being shared? and 3. Does the use of technology distract the students from completing their work or does it act as motivation to engage in the lesson being taught? These 3 questions are the foundation of the Triple E model that a teacher should always consider when they decide to integrate technology into their lessons.

Blog 3. Student Teaching
My Experience as a First Time Student Teacher - November 28, 2021
My first placement at Holmfield Colony, alongside my cooperating teacher, was a great experience. I was a little overwhelmed at first, as I usually am with anything new. However, week by week I got more and more comfortable and really enjoyed my time with my grade 1- 4 class. I met so many new people and really enjoyed building relationships with students, staff, as well as other teachers I met through personal development and in-services. My students and cooperating teacher taught me so much in such a short period of time. I will cherish the time I had with them as they were all so good to me. This group taught me the importance of building strong connections. They have hearts of gold and are so appreciative of all you do. Holmfield School provides a very positive atmosphere that is very inviting and welcomes you to show up every day with a big smile. I am grateful for my time with them, and miss teaching them.
My cooperating teacher was super supportive of me which made my time in the classroom that much better. She guided me, and gave me constant feedback on thing I could develop. I am thankful for her feedback as it is never a bad thing to have things I need to work on. It gave me a way to improve, and I am forever grateful for that. I learned very quickly how important it is to take feedback as a challenge and not a threat. I did well with taking feedback as a challenge and adapting things to help me grow. Even as a teacher we are always learning, and that's what I love about teaching. She was always including me in planning, and took my input, which helped me grow immensely over the few weeks I spent with her. I am so thankful for all the time she put in helping me become a better teacher.
My first placement taught me a few key things that I will carry on with me throughout my career. I learned that the most important role of a teacher is to create strong connections with each individual student. Building strong relationships ensures a safe and strong learning environment. Once strong relationships are built this helps ensure a strong classroom culture.Through my experience of teaching and observing, it is apparent that to create an effective classroom culture it is vital to build strong connections with the students. Once you build strong connection with the students, they will begin to trust you, which will result in them respecting you. Respect between a student and teacher allows for effective teaching and learning. To create that effective culture, it is important I make them feel safe, respected, and support them. Having a strong connection is vital to the student’s ability and willingness to learn. Once I have built that strong connection then I am able to engage them in learning, which is evident in the lessons I have given. I learned that as a teacher I want my students to respect me and for me to reciprocate that respect to them. There needs to be a collective relationship between me and my students. Creating strong connections enables the classroom to develop effective teaching and learning habits which helps to develop rewarding relationships. There must be a balance between strong relationships and classroom culture as they impact one another. One thing I executed well was creating strong relationships with my students which made my feel really good as this is very important. During my time there I worked hard at developing relationships with each child. I do well with staying consistent and being fair in my approach. Some students challenged me in this area but by the end of five weeks I can confidently say that I built a strong connections with each student. I had two students that took awhile to build a connection with. They were resistant and I was aware of this. During the first week or two they challenged me in many ways. I kept a safe distance but little by little interacted with them to slowly gain their trust without moving things too fast. I wanted to take things slow as I didn't want to push to hard and lose the progress we were slowly making. This approach seemed to work for them. By the end of week two we created a strong relationship and wow did it ever impact their willingness to learn. My experience with my two students highlighted how important it is to build those connections.
Something else I learned is how crucial it is to reinforce good behaviour. I quickly learned that I don’t always want to be nagging or it will negatively affect my relationship with my students. Therefore, it is important to remember to reinforce them for all the good, as it boosts their confidence and willingness to learn. Over the few weeks I worked really hard on this and by the end I did well with being aware of their good behaviours and reinforcing them for meeting my expectations.
Secondly, classroom management is key. I learned that from day one I must set expectations for my students and that I should set high expectations for my students. It is important that I oversee the classroom and that my students do not make the calls. If I can’t manage my classroom there will be no room for teaching as I will constantly be managing their behaviour. It is crucial, to make rules clear the first day and to stay consistent. Doing this will ensure a healthy learning environment for me and my students. It is important that I check in with my students and ensure that their needs are being met because if they aren’t they won’t be willing to learn. It is good to stop and check in with my students and make sure I am supporting them so that they are capable of learning. For my next time student teaching, one thing I need to work on is strengthening my classroom management skills. I struggle with consistently supporting my students to meet the expectations that I set out for them. I am one who likes to give more chances than I should which sometimes results in a student taking advantage of me. However, this is not the students fault as I allow for them to push and push. Overall, I feel I did a good job during my first placement, but there is definitely room for improvement. Classroom management is crucial to ensure a healthy learning environment. Providing a healthy learning environment is very important to me and that is why I want to improve how I manage my classroom.
I learned how important it is to model for my students. When delivering a lesson or discussing their behaviour it is important to model my thinking process. My cooperating teacher taught me that I need to think out loud and model to them that if “I can, I can, then we can, we can, and you can, you can”. Modeling helps ensure that I build the confidence of my students to show them that they are capable of learning and doing. This is something I want to work harder on executing in my classroom. I want my students to feel capable and modeling my thought process to them will be highly beneficial.
Personally, I feel I executed lesson planning very well. I was capable of creating lesson plans that were equipped for grades 1-4. Having a multilevel grade classroom is very challenging but rewarding at the same time. Teaching a multilevel grade was an amazing experience and I am so glad I had the opportunity. At first, I was overwhelmed at the thought of having to teach four different grades, but someone reminded me that I should think of all classrooms as being multigrade with the different levels of student skills. These words will stick with me forever as they assured me that I am capable of teaching a multigrade classroom. I did well with taking the outcomes that my cooperating teacher assigned me and creating engaging, and strong lessons. I did well with instructing lessons, with detailed activating, acquiring and applying sections. I was always using a variety of strategies to keep the children focused. One of my strengths would be that I am good at breaking down ideas and concepts into smaller steps and supporting my explanations with visuals, exemplars, graphics organizer etc. However, I faced a few challenges and am aware of what I need to work on. I need to work on consistently supporting my students to meet the expectations that I have set out for them. I also need to work on time management. I struggle with short periods of work where sometimes my lessons were rushed because we ran out of time. However, this is something that will come with practice. Another challenge I faced was making sure I reach all skill levels. I had one boy in particular who was an outstanding student and I struggled with providing him with materials that challenged him during lessons as most other students were at the same level. Overall, I am very happy with how I planned and executed my lessons, but will be sure to reflect on each lesson and take that time to adapt, which will contribute to more growth.
Another thing I need to work on is integrating ICT in the classroom. During my five weeks at Holmfield Colony I used very little ICT in the classroom. The only form of technology that I used during my time there was Vooks. Vooks is a site that provided unlimited books that are shared in video form. The students absolutely love this site though, so I am glad we got to use it. The students also have access to Epic on their iPad's which is a program that students can read or listen to books. Most technology in that class provided the students with access to reading. This may seem like repetitive use of the technology, or poor lack of technology considering all of the possibilities. However, it is very beneficial technology to the classroom as they are all EAL students. It is evident that Holmfield Colony doesn't use a lot of technology as that is part of their culture. In all honesty I love technology, but it was kind of nice as students were so much more appreciative of other things while teaching. Also during my time there for two whole weeks we had no internet which made it challenging to use ICT in the classroom. I would have liked to try a few things, such as Plickers, Kahoot, or smart boards, but it just wasn't accessible during my time there. I do look forward to having the opportunity to explore with ICT more in my next placement. However, I am okay with having the little experience I did with ICT as it is a whole other experience. We rely a lot on technology these days so it was interesting to have to plan without relying on it.
All in all, my first placement helped to strengthen and confirm my passion for teaching. My students provided me with a great first experience. I am forever grateful for my time with them. However, not every day was easy, there were some challenges, but those challenges taught me that I can overcome whatever is thrown my way to ensure that I provide my students with the best learning experiences. I am already looking forward to my second placement and eager to find out where it will take place.

With today's society being so technologically demanding, there are multiple ways a teacher can include technology, specifically digital storytelling, within the classroom, to enable students to share their learning and understanding. There are many resources out there such as Flipgrid, Tik Tok, Podcasting, Co-spaces EDU, 3-D Bear, Tooontastic, Story Creator, and so many more.
While paroozing Pinterest I came across an idea that I would love to use in the classroom one day. The idea behind it, is that it is a way to teach students about making inferences and drawing conclusion. What better way then setting up a "crime scene" to do this. The students are expected to use provided clues to come up with creative conclusions. I as a teacher would set up the classroom to look like a crime scene. I would provide evidence/clues and provide them with background knowledge to set things up. I would then give my students time to investigate the crime scene in order to make inferences about what happened and once they gathered all the information they needed, to come up with a creative conclusion.
I would like to do this as a project in my class but also enable my students to show me their learning with digital storytelling. What would this look like you might ask? Once my students have come up with their creative conclusion they will work in partners to video each-other on a digital app for example Tik Tok or Flipgrid. The students will use this platform to justify their case. They will discuss the clues/ evidence they created and what inferences they concluded and what their overall conclusion of the crime is. We will then share their videos with the class to see if any of the students can persuade others to change their overall conclusion of what happened.
Another example of using digital storytelling in the classroom, with the crime scene, is that students can work in pairs to gather all the clues/evidence they need to make inferences about what happened. Once they have come up with their creative conclusion they could use digital storytelling to tell the story of what happened. One student can be the suspect and the other can be the investigator and they talk through the clues and evidence to interrogate the suspect into finding out they are guilty to reveal the truth. There are so many different ways you could go about this project but it would be a fun and engaging way to teach students how to make inferences and draw conclusions while incorporating learning aspects of technology in the classroom.
Digital story telling is a fun and engaging way to highlight students experiences of learning and understanding in a creative way. When searching the benefits of storytelling I came across an article that shares 6 reasons why we should implement the use of digital storytelling in the classroom and I agree with all six points made. The reasons being: "it encourages leadership, promotes competency with technology, strengthens critical thinking and decision making, perfect for sharing and collaboration, is a creative means of assessment, and mirrors the traditional writing process: brainstorm, plan, create, revise edit publish and edit" (Warfield, 2016 ). Digital storytelling provides students with endless opportunities and is a fun and engaging way for students to share their learning experiences.

My final post before winter holidays will consist of my experiences in my ICT 362 course. I will share an overview of what I learned, my biggest take-aways, and how I will share and implement my knowledge on ICT, digital citizenship, ICT frameworks, and tools in my future classroom. Furthermore, I will explain how I plan to continue to stay on top of ICT tools, and what I will do when I am "stuck or experiencing difficulties in my classroom.
Over the course of this semester, I learned a lot about ICT and how to implement it effectively and safely into my classroom, which was the main objective of the course. We also learned about digital literacy and how one picture can be interpreted in a number of different ways due to the headlines and captions associated with the photo. As Abraham Lincoln once said, " Don't believe everything you read on the internet just because there's a picture with a quote next to it". Always be aware and cautious of what you are reading. Later on, we learned about four different frameworks: the Blooms Digital Taxonomy, the TIM model (The Technology Integration Matrix), The Triple E Framework, and the SAMR model. We learned how to use these frameworks to evaluate the effectiveness of ICT softwares and apps that we can integrate into our classrooms. To learn more about these models please check out blog post #2. Next, we learned about the importance of digital citizenship, digital literacy and, our digital identity. To learn more about these three terms please check out blog #1 as I explain these in full detail. Furthermore, we learned about the five big ideas of the LwICT curriculum: question and plan, gather and make sense, product to show understanding, communicate, and reflect. We also learned about the importance of teaching kids SIFTING skills when browsing the internet. When "SIFTING through the CRAAP", we must remember to check the: "currency- the timeliness of the information, Relevance- the importance of the information for your needs, Authority- the source of the information, Accuracy- the reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of the content, and the Purpose- the reason the information exists"( adapted by Molly Beestrum). SIFT stands for" Stop- Investigate the source- Find better coverage- Trace claims, quotes and media to the original context. We also learned how to teach kids to be internet awesome: "share with care, don't fall for fake, secure your secrets, it's cool to be kind, and when in doubt, talk it out". There is a lot that we learned over the short three months in the class, but there is so much more to learn. Technology is constantly and rapidly changing and it is important to keep up with all of it. There will never be a time where we know it all, therefore, we must be open to continuously learn as we go.
Technology Apps and Sites we Learned about over the Course:
We learned about: how to make a blog, Twitter, Flipgrid, Lumio, Tweetdeck, Plickers, Edupuzzle, Teded, Google Experiments, Kodable, Scratch, many resource on how to teach students to code, Minecraft Education, benefits to google app (dictation, translation and copying text), messaging apps for parents, Cueprompter (tool for speaking) Tik Tok, Digital storytelling: Tik Tok, storyjumper, Toontastic, Epic, Virtual Fieldtrips, Wakelet, 3D-Bear, Co-Spaces EDU and many many more.
Biggest Takeaway:
My biggest take away from the course is how beneficial it is to implement technology into the classroom. We live in a technologically demanding world, so why not use it as a teaching tool in the classroom. Technology provides educators with many advantages. It provides fun and engaging ways to strengthen your lessons. There are limitless technology tools out there to add excitement to students learning experiences. The variety of technology tools out there are endless. It is safe to say there is probably an app for anything that you can think of. However, along with the benefits of technology it is crucial to teach students the importance on safe use of these platforms. It is our job to make sure that we teach kids how to properly use these apps and sites while protecting their digital identity.
How I will Share and Implement my Knowledge on ICT, Digital Citizenship, ICT Frameworks, and Tools in my Future Classroom:
During my time as an educator, I will be sure to share all the knowledge I have gained through this course with my students as well as other peers and colleagues. I will be sure to share all the apps and advantages of using them with others. I will be sure to use a variety of these apps through my teaching career. I will also make sure without a doubt that I teach my colleagues, peers, and students the importance of digital literacy, digital citizenship, and digital identity. Please refer back to my blog #1, to learn more about my knowledge on the importance of digital literacy, digital literacy, and digital citizenship as I explain all three in detail and why it is important to teach students about them.
Staying Up-To-Date:
I plan to stay on top of technology tools by doing continuous research, and by asking my colleagues as well as my students about new technology. I will continuously be on the search for new tools that I can implement into my classroom. When it comes to technology I am pretty determined to figure out how to use things, therefore, when I am stuck, I will usually play around with things until I get a good understanding on how to use it or I will google to find tips and tricks on how to use it or watch youtube videos to walk me through it.
How I Plan to Implement Technology into my Classroom:
Living in todays day, and the high demand of ICT, I can guarantee I will be using ICT in all subject areas. ICT is a great tool that can enhance ways of teaching and learning. ICT provides endless opportunities for not only the students but the teachers as well. It can be used in a number of different ways from researching, to making videos for presentations, using for math games, watching Vooks (video books) and many many more ways. Technology is a new and exciting tool that can help students strive. However, before using technology in my classroom I will take my time to ensure that I teach the responsibilities of an ICT user. I will be sure to teach my students how to protect their identity, and the dangers that come along with the use of technology. It is important to me that a student shows me how to properly use technology before using it in my classroom.
Thanks for tuning back in for another week of Teacher Talk. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I will be taking a short break during the holidays, but be sure to stay tuned for more in the upcoming year of 2022!
Cheers!
