Classroom Management
I believe classroom management is instrumental in creating a positive learning environment. There are many parts to classroom management: such as, developing rules and procedures, time management, engaging students in their learning process, building relationships with students, involving parents, and providing discipline and consequences for inappropriate behaviours. It is important to me that I develop expectations with my students to maintain appropriate behaviours and support an orderly learning environment to avoid problems- as well as be consistent and provide consequences when necessary. It is important to me that I build a deep and genuine connection with each student. For example, I love attending my students extracurricular activities to support them and get to know them outside of the classroom. It is also important to me that my students are engaged. I love hands-on, integrating technology, providing choice, and basing lessons on their interests. Classroom management impacts my ability to teach and my student's ability to learn. Therefore, as a new teacher I will be sure I provide students with flexible seating, fidgets, visuals, lighting covers etc to meet the needs of each student to ensure they are provided with the best learning experience. During one of my placements one thing I noticed that bothered me was poor transitions. This was something that I worked on with my students. I modelled what I expected, then we practiced daily. By the end of my time with my class, major improvements were made in their transitioning. As a new teacher transitions are something that I will model and practice from day one. I like things to run in an orderly fashion and for students to know what is expected from them. Smooth transitions save a lot of valuable teaching time and learning.
Inclusive Classroom
Inclusive classrooms are welcoming and support the diverse needs of all learners, ensuring all students feel a sense of belonging. No one should ever be left behind. I believe all students should feel like they are a part of our classroom community and that they belong among the four walls of 'our' classroom. It is important to shift from the mindset of equality to equity. We must provide our students with everything they need to succeed, which may be different from other students. It is crucial to understand that some students come with less and need a little more. It is important to me that I evolve and meet the needs of my students. For example, I must provide differentiated instructions to teach to all of the multiple intelligences of my students. I need to let my students show learning in different ways to provide them with the opportunity to succeed. As a new teacher, it is important to me that I value the diversity of my students and teach my students how to accept diversity in the classroom. I promise to teach my students how to support one another and foster a collaborative learning environment
