About Doolittle Prairie State Preserve

Doolittle Prairie State Preserve was dedicated in 1980 and is managed by the Story County Conservation Board in Iowa. This 40-acre prairie pothole preserve contains remnant wet prairie, sedge meadow, and 14 emergent pothole marshes. Some 223 native plant species can be observed within the preserve. There is no record of plowing in the northern portion of the preserve, while plowing prior to 1965 has been documented elsewhere. Typical of wet lands unsuitable for farming, prairie hay was harvested from the site prior to 1970. The prairie is managed with fire, with no more than half of the prairie burnt on 2-3 year return intervals.

Amenities

Doolittle prairie is a relatively flat preserve with no established trails or restroom facilities. Off road parking is available.
