8–12 December
Mides Academy experienced a productive and engaging week from 8th to 12th December, marked by academic focus, student participation, and co-curricular development.
Throughout the week, learners remained actively engaged in classroom activities as teachers continued syllabus coverage and conducted continuous assessments to monitor students’ progress. Emphasis was placed on revision, critical thinking, and practical learning across all levels.
Students also participated in various co-curricular activities, including sports and club sessions, promoting teamwork, discipline, and creativity. These activities contributed positively to students’ overall development and school spirit.
The academy maintained a calm and supportive learning environment, with staff and students demonstrating commitment to excellence, respect, and responsibility.
Mides Academy appreciates the continued support of parents and stakeholders and looks forward to another successful week of learning and growth.
As the first week of December unfolded at Mides Academy, the campus entered a period of concentrated academic focus paired with gentle seasonal anticipation. The colder mornings and softened afternoon light brought a steady calm to corridors and classrooms, balanced by purposeful preparation for upcoming end-of-term milestones. Throughout the week, pupils, staff, and faculty demonstrated quiet determination, steadily transitioning from November events toward the academic final stretch of the winter term.
Following last week’s Winter Science Fair, the Science Department dedicated this entire week to structured feedback, lab portfolio refinement, and technical evaluation sessions. Project boards, digital experiment logs, and data tables remained displayed in departmental rooms until mid-week, giving non-participating students the opportunity to view and reflect on the research executed by their peers. Teachers hosted short debrief sessions, guiding students through analysis of what worked well, what could be strengthened, and how presentation techniques might develop further in the spring showcase period.
In addition, laboratory teams worked on equipment reset, chemical storage checks, and the archiving of student experiment journals. The overall tone was reflective, academically mature, and deeply focused, marking a responsible close to one of Mides Academy’s most extensive research cycles.
The Performing Arts Wing saw regular activity this week as the winter stage production entered technical development. Lighting grids were tested against the metallic set structure now permanently installed at the rear of the auditorium, while the sound team conducted layered atmospheric recordings to create the industrial ambience of Midlana’s early-era city streets.
Rehearsals shifted from basic blocking to full-sequence enactments, enabling cast members to explore character pacing, dialogue rhythm, and spatial interaction with constructed stairwells and street façades. Costume fittings continued throughout Thursday and Friday, with fabric adjustments carefully marked by members of the theatre support staff. The auditorium remained in near-constant use, gradually transforming into a fully dressed performance environment ahead of the final two-week run-up.
The Library continued to experience a consistent flow of students engaged in the Winter Reading Challenge. This week, reading logs were checked with particular care, ensuring accuracy and completeness before the mid-challenge evaluation scheduled for the second week of December. Quiet study corners filled gradually each morning, especially among pupils preparing not only for reading targets but also for end-term assessments in humanities, English literature, and history.
Librarians introduced thematic weekly shelf displays, including “Cities Through Time,” “Scientific Imagination,” and “Voices Beyond Borders,” each accompanied by short note cards summarising context, setting, and narrative focus. These additions encouraged further independent borrowing and provided students with guided connections between reading choices and curriculum topics currently taking place across departments.
Faculty teams initiated the first stage of end-term tracking this week, carefully reviewing assessment frameworks, unit summaries, and course objectives across all year groups. Students took part in advisory-room consultations, ensuring clarity on deadlines, revision expectations, and project submission requirements. Notably, Year 10 and Year 11 form groups were briefed on recommended revision pacing, exam-level note-making techniques, and quiet study practice habits.
The general tone throughout corridors reflected structured purpose: movement remained orderly, lessons transitioned smoothly, and form tutors noted strong attendance and punctuality. Classroom environments remained professionally focused, with teachers reporting minimal distractions and a steady academic rhythm appropriate for the season.
In preparation for the upcoming district final, the football squad continued disciplined training sessions, allocating practice time toward defensive coordination and endurance conditioning. Indoor athletics spaces were reserved across several afternoons due to frost-level temperatures, yet coaching schedules proceeded uninterrupted. The Sports Office expressed appreciation for the consistent team attendance and continued strategic concentration.
Support among students remained evident in poster displays, message banners, and sports-themed illustrations placed respectfully along the Sports Wing notice corridor. While excitement surrounding the final is gradually building, the prevailing tone among the players remains controlled, focused, and quietly confident.
The Dining Hall operated to high organisational standards this week, with winter lunch settings arranged to support both increased foot traffic and colder outdoor conditions. Menu rotation continued with familiar warm seasonal options, and staff observed smooth queue management and considerate table sharing among all year groups.
Mid-week behaviour notes reflected positive cooperation and uniform adherence, particularly in communal spaces. Coats, bags, and winter items were stored efficiently with minimal disruption to circulation routes, contributing to the calm winter atmosphere that characterised the entire campus.
With early winter arriving more noticeably, grounds staff monitored safety conditions on external walkways, ensuring that paths were gritted before morning arrival times. Form tutors reminded students to remain attentive to weather shifts and maintain appropriate outdoor wear in line with uniform guidance. The overall environment felt composed yet quietly seasonal, signalling the gradual arrival of December traditions without disrupting academic concentration.

This week at Mides Academy has been one of our busiest and most inspiring of the term, filled with academic celebration, creative preparation, and a sense of full school community energy. As November draws to a close, both staff and students demonstrated exceptional commitment to upcoming events, enrichment activities, and independent learning, showing once again why Mides Academy stands firmly at the heart of Midesville education.
The entire school has been working tirelessly ahead of Thursday’s Winter Science Fair, which remains one of the biggest annual occasions on the academic calendar. Hallways are lined with display boards, diagrams, experiment logs, and annotated research journals created by participating pupils from Years 8–11. Throughout the week, the Science Department opened lunchtime demonstration periods, allowing students to rehearse their verbal explanations, test experiment timings, and adjust presentation layouts.
Teachers reported extremely high standards this year, particularly in projects focusing on renewable energy modelling, hydro-powered micro-turbines, atmospheric carbon capture designs, and prototypes exploring ethical robotics. Several groups also finalised statistical charts and digital animations to accompany their stands, making this year’s Science Fair one of the most technologically advanced. Judging will take place on Thursday 28 November, beginning mid-morning, with the School Hall converted into a professional exhibition space for visiting families later in the afternoon.
The Drama Department continued preparations for the winter performance “The Clockwork Streets of Midlana”, an original narrative based on early industrial Midesville. Sets, props, street scenes, and clock-tower pieces were positioned in the Auditorium throughout the week while the cast completed their first full-script read-through under guidance from the Performing Arts Team.
Though casting is complete, this week focused on character voice work, era-appropriate mannerisms, costume fittings, and blocking of key street-scene sequences. The design team finalised the metallic clock-structure backdrop which will serve as the central visual symbol of the production. Staff noted strong dedication during after-school practice sessions and praised the collaborative atmosphere that continues to define this year’s cast preparation.
The Library opened this week’s new Winter Reading Challenge, inviting all year groups to select three books from curated reading lists designed to strengthen vocabulary, narrative comprehension, and exam-level literacy confidence. Resource tables now display a wide range of genres including historical fiction, scientific non-fiction, climate-response essays, and modern global literature.
Form tutors recorded participation across morning registrations, with the majority of students already committing to their full three-book target. Many have begun recording reflections in their reading journals, and lunchtime study areas have been noticeably busier than usual. The challenge runs until 20 December, encouraging students to continue reading consistently as assessment periods approach.
This week also saw a renewed focus on shared standards across corridors, classrooms, and communal learning spaces. Staff reported exceptional student conduct and a particularly calm atmosphere during transitions between lessons. Mides Academy’s long-established expectations of uniform presentation, punctuality, and focused daily engagement were seen in exemplary form.
The Inclusion Support Office noted strong peer collaboration, especially among mixed-year group revision teams. This has contributed significantly to the wider academic spirit present throughout the building as mock preparation begins and project deadlines approach.
As the Winter Cup final nears, the school football squad continued whole-team training across both sports fields and indoor conditioning spaces. Strategic drills, communication exercises, and ball-control rehearsals were balanced with sportsmanship discussions led by the coaching team. Spectator banner designs and training logs were delivered steadily to the Sports Office throughout the week, showing high levels of supporter enthusiasm from across all year levels.
Team practice sessions were observed to be highly disciplined, reflecting months of development dating back to preseason activity at the start of term. Spirits remain high and commitment remains strong as the district final approaches in early December.
In the Dining Hall, seasonal menu updates were introduced, bringing warm servings suitable for the late-autumn temperature drop. Popular selections throughout the week included spiced tomato pasta, baked vegetable wraps, and the new winter berry crumble, which saw consistently long queues by Wednesday. Lunchtime monitors noted a comfortable, respectful atmosphere with students making efficient use of assigned seating and maintaining positive behaviour throughout mealtime.
The end of November also signals the approaching winter term events calendar. Students are reminded to keep an eye on corridor noticeboards, form room screens, and daily announcements for schedules relating to assessment briefings, rehearsal timings, and term-end arrangements. Uniform reminders remain in effect, including permission for the approved navy jumper as temperatures continue to fall.

After a well-deserved half-term break, Mides Academy joyfully reopened its doors on Monday, November 3rd, marking the beginning of a brand-new half-term. The weather was bright and cool — a perfect start to what the staff called “The Road to December Excellence.”
As students arrived in their neat uniforms, the school grounds buzzed with excitement. The Principal, Mr. Gabriel Omolayomi, led the morning assembly in the Blue Hall, welcoming both returning and new students. His speech focused on motivation, discipline, and preparation for end-of-term success, emphasizing the academy’s theme for the term:
“Finishing Strong, Standing Tall.”
He encouraged students to aim high, show respect, and embrace every opportunity that Mides Academy offers. Following his speech, the choir performed the Mides Academy Anthem and the National Anthem of Midlana, filling the hall with pride and energy.
During form time, tutors handed out new timetables, reviewed updated class seating charts, and gave out student planner inserts for recording homework and personal goals. Year 9 students were reminded about the importance of consistent revision ahead of their upcoming mock exams in December.
By mid-morning, classrooms were fully alive again — teachers revising past topics, introducing new lessons, and setting expectations for the rest of the term. The ICT Department also issued important reminders about online safety and responsible use of digital tools, including the Mybor School Management System and My Reader learning app.
By Tuesday, the academy had quickly returned to its academic rhythm. Lessons resumed across all departments with enthusiasm and focus.
English Department:
Year 7 explored mythical storytelling and how to use vivid description to build suspense. Year 8 began a new writing unit on creative narratives, while Year 9 students started analyzing modern literature texts to prepare for their upcoming comparative essays.
Mathematics Department:
Students across all year groups reviewed core numeracy skills before diving into new topics. Year 9 focused on probability and algebraic fractions, while Year 8 began geometry and transformations.
Science Department:
Practical sessions resumed in the labs, with safety protocols reviewed for all classes. Year 9 carried out experiments on cell diffusion and osmosis, while Year 8 explored chemical reactions and heat energy. The Science staff encouraged students to complete practical write-ups neatly and on time, as these count toward their progress assessments.
Humanities (History & Geography):
History lessons covered The Industrial Revolution and The Civil Rights Movement, while Geography explored global ecosystems and climate zones of Midlana. Teachers used interactive maps and Mybor assignments to make learning more engaging.
ICT & Computing:
The ICT team reintroduced lessons on digital safety, ethical technology use, and basic coding revision for new term projects. Students were reminded to update their Mybor passwords and check assignment deadlines weekly to avoid missing submissions.
In addition, student attendance reached a strong 96% for the day — an excellent sign of commitment following the break.
Wednesday was a particularly exciting day at Mides Academy, as it marked the beginning of Club Registration Week. The assembly hall transformed into a Club Exhibition Fair, where tables were set up for each extracurricular activity. Students had the chance to explore and sign up for their preferred clubs, including:
🎨 Art & Design Club
⚽ Sports & Athletics Club
🎭 Drama & Performing Arts Club
💻 ICT & Coding Club
🎵 Music Ensemble
🧠 STEM Innovators
🗣️ Debate & Public Speaking Society
📚 Creative Writing Circle
Each club outlined its plans for the half-term, including competitions, exhibitions, and events. The Art Department announced its new project titled “Colours of Midlana,” in which students will create paintings inspired by the beauty of the Midesville landscape and Troll Colour Day.
Meanwhile, the Drama Club resumed rehearsals for the much-anticipated end-of-term performance, “Echoes of Midesville,” an original script by the academy’s creative arts team.
Sports activities also gained momentum. The Physical Education Department began selections for football, basketball, and athletics teams ahead of the Inter-School Winter Sports Challenge, which will take place later this month. Coaches reminded all athletes to stay hydrated, keep uniforms neat, and attend training punctually.
Thursday’s morning assembly was led by Mr. Leon Creed, Head of Defiant and C3. His talk centered around positive behaviour, respect, and resilience. He emphasized that true success combines academic excellence with good manners, honesty, and teamwork.
He announced new reward categories on the Mybor system — Leadership, Effort, and Kindness — encouraging students to earn points not just for grades but for good conduct and contributions to the school community.
In class, teachers held short progress assessments to check students’ understanding from the first few lessons of the week. Many students performed impressively, demonstrating that they were ready to give their best this half-term.
The Student Council also met for the first time this term to discuss upcoming charity drives and ways to improve the lunchtime environment. Council members agreed to organize a “Kindness Week” later in November to promote unity and gratitude.
The week concluded on a high note with House Assemblies held across the academy. Each House met with their captains and tutors to discuss upcoming events and term goals. The House of Midesville currently leads the leaderboard with 285 points, followed closely by House of Veroes and House of Rann.
Teachers also announced the Star Students of the Week, chosen for effort, respect, and teamwork. Winners received digital badges and certificates via Mybor, which are automatically added to their student records.
In the afternoon, the Principal’s Closing Assembly gathered everyone once more in the main hall. Mr. Omolayomi congratulated all students for a successful first week back and encouraged them to maintain high attendance, proper uniform, and consistent focus. His final words were a reminder of what Mides Academy stands for:
“We don’t just learn here — we grow, we build character, and we make history.”
Mybor Updates:
All students should log into Mybor daily to check assignments, attendance records, announcements, and reward points. Students who have trouble logging in should visit the ICT office during break.
Uniform Reminder:
Students must wear the full official uniform each day, including proper black shoes and ties for upper years. Hoodies, caps, and non-uniform jumpers are not allowed.
End-of-Term Assessments:
Exams for Years 7–9 will begin on Monday, December 8th. Revision lists and timetables will be uploaded to Mybor next week.
Class Photos & Talent Show:
Preparations will begin soon for Class Photo Day and the annual Mides Academy Talent Show, scheduled for the first week of December. Students interested in performing should sign up at the school office.
Parent-Teacher Conference:
The Parent-Teacher Meeting will take place on Friday, November 21st, 2025, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Parents will receive detailed academic progress reports and have opportunities to meet subject teachers.
Health & Safety:
Students should bring refillable water bottles, avoid running in corridors, and report any safety concerns to the nearest staff member immediately.
As the first week of November wraps up, Mides Academy celebrates a successful and energetic start to the new half-term. With classes in full motion, clubs reopened, and goals clearly set, the school community stands ready for a term filled with learning, creativity, and excellence.
To every student — remember:

Dear Students and Parents,
This is a friendly reminder of the importance of regular and punctual attendance at Mides Academy. Every lesson counts, and consistent attendance helps students succeed academically and socially.

Attendance matters: Missing school can make it harder to keep up with coursework, homework, and class activities.
Communication: If a student is unwell or cannot attend, please inform the school office as soon as possible.
Set a daily routine to ensure timely arrival.
Keep track of your classes and homework to avoid falling behind.
Aim for 100% attendance — it is recognised with reward points at the end of each term.
Let’s work together to ensure every student makes the most of their learning opportunities this term.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Mides Academy Office Team

Kindness matters: Help and support your classmates whenever possible, and always aim to be a positive influence.
Students who consistently display excellent behaviour will earn reward points and recognition.

Let’s all work together to make Mides Academy a place where everyone can learn, grow, and succeed.

This term, Mides Academy is expanding its extracurricular programme to give students even more opportunities to learn new skills and make new friends. Clubs include Coding Club, Debate Society, Choir, Board Games, Drama Workshop, and more.
➡️ To help us organise groups properly, all students are required to complete the Extracurricular Clubs Form by Wednesday, 18 September. Students should indicate which clubs they are interested in joining. Places will be confirmed by the end of the week, and most clubs will begin running from next Monday.
Parents are encouraged to discuss the available clubs with their child and support them in choosing at least one enrichment activity.
Trials for the boys’ and girls’ football teams will take place on Thursday afternoon. Students wishing to participate must bring their full PE kit and water bottle. Selected teams will go forward to represent Mides Academy in the Midesville Inter-School League beginning in October. Additionally, the PE department will run a Wellbeing Circuit Challenge on Friday as part of our “Fitness Friday” initiative.
We continue to be aware of the large number of students who gather in Midesville city centre after school. While we recognise the social value of these spaces, safety remains our priority. Staff will be present in key locations this week to monitor behaviour and encourage students to travel home directly. Parents are asked to remind their child to avoid unnecessary delays after school.
This week, teachers will be awarding double positive points for punctuality and consistent homework completion. This is part of our ongoing effort to build positive habits in the early part of the academic year. Students who collect the highest number of points by Friday will be celebrated in assembly.
On Friday, 20 September, we are pleased to welcome Mr. Leon Creed, Head of Defiant and C3, who will lead a whole-school assembly on “Building a Respectful School Community.” His message will focus on how students can contribute to a culture of kindness, respect, and accountability across the academy.
We are excited to announce the launch of our Student Spotlight this term. Each week, the academy will highlight students who demonstrate exceptional effort, kindness, leadership, or creativity both in and out of the classroom.
Chosen students will receive certificates during Friday assemblies and their names will be added to the Mides Academy Hall of Excellence. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our young people throughout the term.
📢 Thank you for continuing to support Mides Academy in making this school year a success. Together, we can ensure every student grows academically, socially, and personally.

Free School Meals (FSM) is a government-funded programme ensuring that eligible students receive a healthy meal every day at school, at no cost to families. This not only supports well-being and concentration in lessons, but it also removes the daily worry of providing money for meals.
Applying for FSM is completely confidential. Students who qualify are not identified separately, and meals are served the same way as any other student.
FSM registration also brings additional Pupil Premium funding to the school, which helps us provide:
Learning Resources: Access to digital devices and learning tools
Trips and Activities: Reduced or fully funded educational trips and experiences
Support Services: Mentoring, well-being sessions, and academic support
After-School Clubs and Interventions
Even if your child prefers a packed lunch, applying for FSM ensures our school receives vital funding that benefits every student. Check your eligibility and apply today [here].
We are thrilled to launch an expanded extra-curricular programme this term at Mides Academy, starting Monday, 15 September. Students in Years 07–10 will have the opportunity to select from a wide range of clubs running during lunchtimes and after school.
Some of the exciting options include:

Athletics Club: Sprinting, long jump, and training for inter-school competitions.
Science Club: Hands-on experiments and STEM challenges.

Share insights about their roles and industries
Explain training and education pathways
Provide inspiration and advice for students planning their futures
Families and community members are invited to participate by sharing their own career journeys. If you would like to inspire our students by speaking about your career, please email Ogomide at osoetan@midesschool.co.uk.
Parents are also encouraged to explore Labour Market Information (LMI) with their children to help them understand career trends, skills in demand, and future opportunities.
Parents and carers can now access student information through the Mybor Parent Portal. This platform allows families to:

Receive important announcements and notifications
If you do not have access or need your login details resent, please email office.team@midesschool.co.uk.
Our annual school photograph day will take place on Friday, 12 September. Students should arrive in full uniform and be prepared for individual and class photos.
We are aware that some students gather in busy areas of Midesville after school. While these areas can be social spaces, they can also present risks and distractions.
To keep students safe, staff will be present in key areas after school, but we ask parents to remind their child to go straight home whenever possible. Any student refusing staff instructions may receive a sanction.
Your partnership is essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of our young people.
We want to remind families of the growing concerns around mobile phone use and social media risks. While phones are useful for communication, there are potential dangers, such as:
Exposure to harmful or explicit content
Sharing or receiving illegal material (even unknowingly)
Cyberbullying and online pressure
Please talk openly with your child about safe phone use. Regularly check their devices and set clear boundaries for online behaviour. If you need advice or support, contact our safeguarding team at safeguarding@midesschool.co.uk.
