The purpose of this detention policy is to establish a consistent, fair, and effective system for addressing student lateness and misbehavior. At Mides Academy, punctuality, discipline, and accountability are essential values that contribute to a positive learning environment. Detention serves as both a corrective measure and an opportunity for students to reflect on their actions and make better choices.
This policy applies to all students across Years 7–11 and is designed to:
Encourage punctuality by ensuring students arrive to school on time each day.
Promote responsibility and accountability for personal behavior.
Provide structured consequences for lateness, disruption, and misconduct.
Support staff in maintaining order and upholding school expectations.
Involve parents/guardians in addressing repeated lateness or behavioral issues.
Detentions at Mides Academy are scheduled every school day to ensure swift consequences and a consistent approach.
After-School Detentions – held daily from 3:10 PM to 4:00 PM.
Full-Day Detentions – assigned as an escalation if a student fails to attend an after-school detention. Full-day detentions last the entire school day, from registration until dismissal.
Location – All detentions will take place in the designated detention room, under staff supervision.
To address the issue of punctuality, the following rules apply:
Late to First Period
Any student who arrives late to school or first period without a valid excuse will automatically receive an after-school detention the same day (3:10–4:00 PM).
A valid excuse may include medical appointments, emergency family circumstances, or other reasons authorized by the school.
Failure to Attend After-School Detention
If a student does not attend their assigned detention, the consequence will automatically escalate to a full-day detention the following school day.
Repeat Lateness
Students who are consistently late will be referred to senior staff and may face additional sanctions, such as parental meetings, behavior contracts, or restricted privileges.
A. After-School Detention (3:10–4:00 PM)
Scheduled every school day immediately after lessons.
Students are expected to complete assigned work or reflective tasks.
Silence must be maintained throughout.
No mobile phone use or disruptive behaviour is permitted.
B. Full-Day Detention (9:00 AM–4:00 PM)
Assigned to students who fail to attend after-school detention or display serious misconduct.
Runs for the entire school day from morning registration until dismissal.
Students will be separated from peers and required to complete supervised academic work.
Strict rules apply: silence, focus on work, and no use of electronic devices.
Break and lunch will be taken in the detention area under supervision.
Punctuality – Students must arrive on time to detention. Late arrival will count as non-attendance.
Conduct – Students must remain silent, focused, and respectful throughout detention.
Work Completion – Students will complete schoolwork, homework, or reflective writing tasks assigned by staff.
No Disruptions – Talking, mobile phone use, or disruptive behavior will result in additional sanctions.
Supervision – A member of staff will be present at all times to monitor attendance and behavior.
Failure to comply with detention rules will lead to further disciplinary measures, including but not limited to:
Additional detention days.
Escalation from after-school detention to full-day detention.
Parental contact and formal meetings.
Suspension for repeated defiance or refusal to attend detentions.
Parents/guardians will always be informed when their child is assigned detention. Communication may be through email, letter, text message, or a phone call from the Admin of Attendance.
For single incidents of lateness, a simple notification will be sent home.
For repeated lateness or non-attendance, parents will be required to attend a meeting with school staff.
In serious or ongoing cases, a formal behavior contract may be issued.
While detention is a disciplinary measure, Mides Academy also seeks to support students in improving their punctuality and behavior. Students who repeatedly attend detentions may be offered:
Meetings with a mentor or pastoral staff.
Time-management or organizational support.
Goal-setting to improve attendance and punctuality.
The ultimate goal of this policy is not punishment but growth. By ensuring that consequences are immediate, consistent, and fair, Mides Academy encourages students to:
Arrive at school on time every day.
Take responsibility for their actions.
Understand the importance of discipline and respect for school rules.
Contribute to a positive and orderly school environment where all students can succeed.
