Conflict is inevitable in team work environments including healthcare, conflict includes negativity, hostility, misunderstanding and disagreements which commonly occur when there are two conflicting opinions or ideas of two members or groups. (Thakore, 2013).
This section will concentrate on three situations of conflict in the hospital setting:
1) Staff vs. staff
2) Staff vs. patients
3) Staff vs. management
It is crucial to understand the background of conflict within the hospital setting in order to develop successful conflict resolution strategies. The impact of such conflict can decrease quality of patient care and patient satisfaction, result in poor functionality and conflicting communication among team members with increased employee turnover rates (Overton & Lowry, 2013).
Nurses are at a high risk for work-family conflict due to the nature of being physically and psychologically demanding and working with high acuity patients and heavy workloads, this can also have detrimental impacts outside of work such as sleep disturbances, work-interference with family life and poor mental health (Mohamed et al., 2022).
