The collection of minerals and rocks at the Museu Geològic del Seminari de Barcelona stands out for its great diversity, both in terms of the number of specimens and their size, provenance, showiness and uniqueness. The museum currently preserves 4,160 specimens of registered minerals, in addition to an undetermined number of rocks that are still in the process of inventorying and cataloguing.
The pieces are distributed in two large sets within the museum:
The samples exhibited in historical display cases in the Exhibition Hall, which present a representative selection of the collection.
The collections preserved in the museum cabinets, stored in boxes and ordered according to scientific criteria.
Eight display cases are dedicated to minerals, classified according to the Strunz system, which groups minerals into eight major categories:
Class I: Native elements
Class II: Sulphides and sulfosalts
Class III: Halides
Class IV: Oxides and hydroxides
Class V: Carbonates, nitrates and borates
Class VI: Sulphates, chromates, molybdates and tungstates
Class VII: Phosphates, arsenates and vanadates
Class VIII: Silicates
The remaining three display cases show rocks classified in the three major geological groups:
Igneous
Metamorphic
Sedimentary
This collection constitutes a valuable scientific reserve, available for study, research and dissemination of geological heritage.
The provenance of the pieces preserved in the museum is very diverse. The collection includes specimens from various parts of the world such as Catalonia, Spain, Europe, North Africa, America, Asia and Australia, which contributes great geological richness to the whole.
The museum also houses various collections from private collectors, professionals and enthusiasts in the world of geology and, especially, mineralogy. Among these collections, the following stand out:
