Make Your Own Tune

Make your own tune

Watch the video before you start, and then use this guide to work through the steps. By the end of it you will have:

  • A rhythm you have made yourself

  • Two or more rhythms you can put together to make a longer piece

  • Something you can then use to play and make up a tune on your instrument

  • Something you can share with other musicians in your family, or with a friend

The steps

  • Use your rhythm cards to lay out a 4 beat rhythm

  • Add more cards to make your rhythm longer if you wish

  • Say your walk, jogging rhythms to make sure you know what the rhythm sounds like

  • Try tapping the rhythm on your knee, or table top

  • Use your instrument / voice and explore which notes you like. It often helps to start and finish on the same note

Other things to try...

  • If you have a keyboard in your house you could set a funky rhythm to play while you play your tune

  • If someone else in your house plays an instrument, you could make up a rhythm for each other. Then you could ask the other person to invent a tune to your rhythm

  • Then you could put the tunes together and make a piece, such as: your tune / their tune / both clap the rhythm / both play your tunes together!!
