The Little Train of the Caipira

by Heitor Villa-Lobos

Introduction:

Have you ever been on a train? There is a train station in Bedford and the trains that come through there can take you almost anywhere in the country! This piece of music though is about a train in Brazil, travelling through the countryside.

Where is Brazil? I wonder if you can find out!

How well did you listen? … can you answer these questions?

  • What does ‘Caipira’ mean?

  • What is ‘syncopation’?

  • Which instrument makes the sound of a whistle?

Activities

Try some of these activities:

Draw your train

Draw a picture of a train travelling through the countryside. What different types of people might you see inside the carriages?

If you like, you can send the picture to us at music@bedford.gov.uk and it might appear on this website. Only give us your first name!

Write a poem

What about writing a poem about a train journey? How does it feel, where are you going? Who do you meet? Perhaps, give it a title!

Send your poem to music@bedford.gov.uk Again, only tell us your first name. Make sure that you have an adult’s permission first.

Join in with some rhythms

Can you say each of these 3 rhythms? Listen first….

Now, if you can, find 2 other people in your home and perform all 3 rhythms at the same time. Perhaps find some objects around the house you can use as instruments. Look at this video for an example. When you are confident enough you can play along with the performance!
