My personal philosophy for building relationships with students, families and the community is rooted in communication and collaboration. When communication is valued in education, everyone involved is able to receive the attention they deserve. Effective communication strategies help parents understand how to help their students succeed in school, students feel whole as their school lives and family lives are not in opposition and teachers are better able to tailor learning for their students as they are informed of who is in their classroom. As a teacher, my role in communication is to be the supporting link between parents, students, and the community. It is my responsibility to help foster communication between these groups with effective student learning as impetus.
With communication as a base for maintaining connectedness, I also believe collaborations among families, teachers, and community members is important. Parent involvement at school, and at home after school, can make a big difference in how a student values their personal education. To me, there is nothing better than to see parent and child work together, using information from school, to enhance the student’s learning. Engaging with the community reminds students that school is important on a larger scale and provides students with a holistic sense of education. From a teacher’s perspective, I feel collaborations bring a sense of social fun to any learning environment. Working with others adds dynamics to the sometimes-static energy of a school.
