If we want adolescents to be seriously engaged in learning, to share their thoughts and feelings, to take risks, and to develop a sense of social responsibility, then we need to organize classrooms so that students feel safe and cared for (Patrick, Ryan, & Kaplan, 2007).

If we want students to feel a sense of connectedness and trust, then we must work to create classroom communities where students know that they are needed, valued members of the group (Roescer, Ecceles, & Sameroff, 2000).
