The Greek Presidential Decree & the Biodiversity Law

2018.04.26

The Presidential Decree "Approval of a list of small island wetlands, and provision of terms and conditions for the protection and conservation of small coastal wetlands included therein" (June 2012) brought 380 natural wetlands across 59 islands under a strict protection status. Just before the Presidential Decree, a Law on the protection of the Biodiversity was approved by the Greek Parliament (March 2011). Among others, this law included certain articles on the Greek wetlands.

Here you can find a translation of the most relevant articles of the Biodiversity Law (articles 13, 16 & 20) and of the Presidential Decree (articles 2 & 3); aiming to inform all MedIswet colleagues on the current legal status of the island wetlands of Greece.

Ramsar Resolution XII.14

2017.07.05

At the 12th Conference of the Parties to the Ramsar Convention held in Uruguay in June 2015, a draft resolution for the “Conservation of Mediterranean Basin island wetlands” was formally submitted by Greece. Finally the draft was unanimously adopted as Ramsar Resolution XII.14. MAVA's decisive decision to support the resolution have leaded to the replication of the Greek Island Wetlands Project to the rest of the islands of the Mediterranean Basin.

French and Spanish version are also available in Ramsar's web site.
