Kindig's Final Moments

Kindig served as a Navigator while flying in a B-29 "Superfortress". On August 26, 1945, Kindig's plane was on a POW mission where the crew would drop supplies via parachute to Allied prisoners in Japan and China. Japan had unconditionally surrendered, so no official fighting was taking place. Just after midnight, the weather was not ideal. Captain Lawson attempted a landing at Isley Field but aborted due to instrument complications plus low visibility. Lieutenant Honeycutt Jr. attempted to turn left, but could not see. He went right. That's when "Temper Eleven" crashed into the west side of the mountain 20 minutes into August 27, 1945. The plane burned immediately. There were no survivors. (Flint Journal August, 1945).
