On July 29, 1943, Shirey was driving two wounded soldiers to a field hospital. As he was driving his jeep, he encountered rough terrain and had to slow down. The area he was in was known to be dangerous as firefights were often exchanged here, but still Shirey had to drive at a lower speed. Japanese machine guns opened fire on the truck and Shirey was instantly killed.
