Around early November of 1944, Letterly fell ill to a tropical disease and was stationed near Finschhafen, New Guinea. He was put on a plane which planned to fly to Australia. Unfortunately, on November 16, 1944, the plane Letterly was on crashed. His parents were informed of his death on Thanksgiving day.
