Lawrence was not yet a citizen of the United States. So he enlisted on May 2, 1917, in Columbus, Ohio for the sole purpose of becoming a US Citizen. On March 31, 1918, Lawrence was hit with artillery shrapnel. He survived the initial hit. But later he would die from wounds on April 1, 1918, in Chemin des Dames, France.
