In 1918, he attended the Students Army Training Corps at Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. In October of 1918, he contracted the flu while "waiting to enter an army cantonment". On October 17, 1918, he died in the local hospital near the university.
