Skill Lab Sessions:

WEEK1

Children`s Health- Promoting children`s health (Growth and development monitoring- counselling regards breast feeding) 

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

By the end of this session students are expected to be able to:

·   Appreciate the role of physician in promoting children`s health through monitoring growth and development and encouraging breast feeding

·   Apply knowledge on growth and development and infant feeding on various clinical situations

·   Practice measuring height/ length and head circumference

·   Practice Plotting different growth parameters on appropriate growth charts

·   Interpret patterns of growth on growth chart bracket

·   Recognize milestones of development in an infant/ child developmental history.

· Counsel parents regarding breast feeding and weaning practice.

Week 3:

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

By the end of this session students are expected to be able to:

· Appreciate the importance of using assessment tools (as PAT and PEWS) in early identification of critically sick or deteriorating child

· Apply the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT) as an initial assessment tool in emergency situation

· Recognize signs of cardiovascular instability and describe how to proceed to stabilize the patient

· Apply PEWS in different clinical situation and interpret its result

· Recommend initial management steps for some common pediatric emergency situations

· Appreciate the importance of proper documentation in emergency situations

· Communicate appropriately with the patients and their families and with colleagues or other team member in emergency situations

Neonatal examination skill lab 

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

By the end of this session students are expected to be able to:

· Perform initial stabilization of a full term well newborn infant immediately after birth

· Calculate APGAR score and interpret the results

· Accurately categorize newborns based on birth weight and maturity

· Perform neonatal ahead to toe neonatal and system examination including specific examination techniques as those used for neurological assessment and neonatal reflexes

· Tailor neonatal examination based on the age and purpose of examination, recognizing the timings of formal neonatal examination

· Capture special examination requirements as examining for congenital anomalies, maturity level and birth injuries

· Identify some common physical findings in newborn infant (normal variants AND pathological findings due to prematurity, birth injury and/or congenital anomalies)
