Secondary Component (PCC)
The Child’s Health block as all blocks in year 5will continue (as a longitudinal component of the programme)providing teaching and learning around specific areas that emphasize Patient Centered Consulting (PCC) through strengthens knowledge and skills in secondary subject areas (Not direct biomedical sciences) that are essential for a holistic practitioner.
Topics are designed to guide students approach toconsultation in complex situations applying and extending skills learnt in previous yearse.gBSS areas, communication skills, ethics and law, medicines safety and prescribing.
In Child’s Health module the secondary components will be delivered in four separate sessions (a weekly session) including 1-2 prescribing sessions.
Pediatric Prescribing
You will all receive teaching related to pediatric prescribing as part of Secondary Component in this block. The teaching is interactive and will consider the following areas: intravenous fluids (bolus and maintenance), common analgesics, common antibiotics, and common asthma medications.
In preparation for the teaching, there will be online self-assessment questions for you to complete. You should complete these questions BEFORE you come along to the teaching session. The link for self-assessment questions will be announced on due time.
Remember you may need to access information in the BNFc and trusted information sources during work in prescribing exercises.
Secondary Topics- Week 1
Objectives:
By the end of this session you are expected to be able to:
· Appreciate the importance of communication with parents in pediatric consultations
· Recognize some communication skills required to deal with children of varying ages during consultation
· Be able to use a structured approach to sharing information (SPIKES)
· Have some appreciation of the skills required to handle difficulties within the pediatric consultations
· Be aware of some communication skills needed if the child or parent (or both) has learning difficulties

· Appreciate the different ethical and legal peculiarities of children`s healthcare practices
· Describe ethical and legal procedures in consenting for children
· Identify the duty of care (roles and responsibilities) for a doctor in safeguarding children
· Describe the procedures for raising concerns about child protection in Saudi Arabia
· Discuss some ethical and legal challenges in children`s healthcare practice

· Appreciate the importance of safe prescribing in pediatrics
· Understand of the differences in drug absorption, distribution, elimination and metabolism in infants and children
· Explain prescription by weight, age and body surface area in children
· Become familiar with common aides to safe prescribing in children
· Practice prescribing of some commonly used medications in pediatrics: Analgesics- Inhalers- Antibiotics – IV fluids

Prescribing in Pediatrics II
Objectives:
By the end of this session you are expected to be able to:
· Appreciate the importance of rational antibiotic use in preventing development of bacterial resistance
· Recognize essential steps for rational antibiotic prescribing for children: indication- antibiotic selection- monitoring
· Review basic pharmacological knowledge required for effective prescribing of some commonly used antibiotics in pediatrics
· Practice prescribing of antibiotics for children in different clinical situations
