The Living Soul

1. The Living soul - Before The Fall:

IN HIM was LIFE; and the LIFE was the LIGHT of men.-  John 1:4

Created in the image, after the likeness of God - Gen. 1:26, 27  

Gen. 1:28-30

Dominion over the fowls of the air, over the fish of the sea, over every animals

Commune with God- Gen. 2:16

Man  has God’s life (undefiled) which is the breath of life or the spirit of God in him.


And thru the undefiled life (spirit) of God…

Man received wisdom and authority from God 

Gen 2:19  

God gave His commandments to be man’s guide - Gen 2:16-17


2.  The Living Soul After the Fall:
Adam did not immediately die physically.

He still existed as the ‘living soul’.  The ‘breath of life was not taken’ from him. 

But  Adam DIED ‘spiritually’ (Ezek. 18:4, 20 ; Rom. 6:23).  The ‘spirit’ within him (breath of life) was defiled (darkened) by SIN.

Dust plus the breath of life (but was darkened by sin is still dust) equals a living soul.

2A.  The Condition of Man (After the Fall):
Rom. 3:23  comes short of the glory of God; 

Mat. 4:16  People sat in darkness (the world is in darkness;  a man lies in darkness.

Gen. 3:19  In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, 

Gen. 3:5   know good and evil 


Rom. 3:11 …none that understand, ... none that seek after God. ;

Rom. 3:12.. all gone out of the way 


Eph. 4:22 ..the old man is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

2Tim. 2:26  at the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. 

Rom. 3:10.. none is righteous, no, not one: 

Satan became:

The prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience - Eph. 2:2

The prince of this world  - John 12:31

The father of lies- John 8:44

Rom. 1:28  …did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind… 

Hence, the Living Soul (Man) After the Fall…

Dust plus the breath of life (but was darkened by sin is still dust) equals a living soul.

Man becomes earthy (1Cor. 15:47); and..

    …..carnal, sold under sin (Rom 7:14) 


So that, the Living Soul (Man) After the Fall…

Dust plus the breath of life (but was darkened by sin is still dust) equals a living soul.


… has NO ability WHATSOEVER; to decide to come to the LORD; neither to ACCEPT the LORD (the new Spirit) by his own ability… (John 1:13; Eph. 2:8-9; Phil. 2:13)

3. The Grace of God….

Restores Us to the Original condition as “Living Soul – Before the Fall”, where…


We received the Undefiled ‘Life of God’ again…

John 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 

Dust plus the breath of life equals a living soul.

4. But the truth is….

Dust plus the breath of life equals a living soul.

Our true condition (the soul) is still fleshly and carnal…

the living soul must ‘die’ to himself and be Christ-like again (Mat 16:24-25) 

 he must ‘deny’ himself (Luke 9:3), and any forms of ‘ungodliness and worldly lusts’ (Ti 2:12) 

So that he is being transformed (sanctified)…

and being conformed to the likeness of the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:29) 

Every Moment...  As The Living Soul 

look unto Jesus….

We see the Undefiled ‘Life of God’, the goodness of HIS grace unto us…. …. 

only because we experience walking in the Light (1 John 1:7)…

…and by the Holy Spirit, HE allows us to see the darkness in our lives…

and His Blood cleanses us from all our sins (1 John 1:8)..

…then we have fellowship with Him (1 John 1:7)..

The nearer we come to Jesus, and the more clearly we discern the purity of His character, the more clearly we shall discern the exceeding sinfulness of sin, and the less we shall feel like exalting ourselves. Christ’s Object Lessons, 159, 160. .

6. We need to die from ourselves…

Mat 10:39   For whosoever will save his life.. shall lose it: and he that loses his life for my sake ..shall find it.

1Pet. 5:6  Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

The More we look unto Jesus... the more He 

exposes the darkness in our lives (Romans 1:29-31)

7. Only because….Satan’s Intention is  to ‘Choke’  the New Life (Relationship)  that God give to Man during his Regeneration:

Satan attacks the soul (mind, will and emotion) to effectually affect the spirit (to darken the spirit) in man.

7B. To do this, Satan’s tactics are the following:

By causing man to sin :

By despising the word of the Lord (Num 15:31);

By unbelief (blindness of the heart) (Rom 14:23); 

By pleasing men rather than God  (1Sam. 15:24); or unknowingly pleasing himself (which is knowing good and evil);

By transgressing the law of God (Dan 9:11);  


By trying to keep the whole law (and yet fail in one and become guilty of all) (James 2:10);  

 b. Deception / lies:

EGW TC vol.3, 252-253 -  The people of God are represented in the message to the Laodecians as in position of carnal security. They are at ease, believing themselves to be in an EXALTED CONDITION of spiritual attainment.


Rom. 16:18  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. 

c. Exploring the sinful (fleshly or carnal) nature of man;


The deceptive tactics of Satan are very elusive and subtle and aimed to divert the attention of every believer (...who are taken captive by him to do his will, 2Tim. 2:26) FROM the truth of the gospel of grace of God towards human ability and efforts (which is pride) which don’t reconcile with the very words of God (John 1:12-13; Eph. 2:8-9): 


Results: FORM OF GODLINESS:

2Tim. 3:7  Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

2Tim. 3:5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

8. We Need to be Revived…and be reformed…

    in ideas and theories, habits and practices (which is transformation or sanctification) – 2 SM,  128; Rom. 8:29. (not what we have learned by ourselves but what the Holy Spirit thought us…)

     work, and in doing this work they must blend –  2 SM, 128 

11. IF  we say we are Revived (Converts / Born from Above)…and  we have New Breath of Life within Us….

We need to go on and LEAVE the RUDIMENTS of this World (Col. 2:8,20)

And to Overcome the Prince of this World and our own Carnality (1Jn. 2:13-14; 4:4)

And day by Day, we be Transformed to the Glory and Likeness of HIS SON JESUS CHRIST (Rom. 8:29)

12. But Knowing that we can’t do this by our own….We Need to humbly bow down and ask the FATHER of Glory….and earnestly PRAY…


‘That He may give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him   

that  our spiritual eyes be enlightened; 

That we may know the hope of his calling, and the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,  and the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power (Eph 1:17-19)
