IS WORLD WAR II YET TO BE FINISHED?

INTRODUCTION

WORLD WAR TWO IN THE LIGHT OF PROPHECY

“He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily. For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches. The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken. The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings. He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defense shall be prepared.” (Nah.2:1-5).

1The war predicted in Nahum, the prophet declares, is fought in the day of the automobile, in the day men “run to and fro,” while the “chariots...rage in the streets,...justle one against another in the broad

ways...while running like the lightning,” -- in our time, when knowledge shall be increased (Dan. 12:4). The prophet saw one that dasheth in pieces daring his enemies to prepare against him. Then the prophet saw the worthies of him who dasheth in pieces stumble in their walk (fall by mistake in their march for victory). Very evident it is that this aggressor power who “dasheth in pieces,” girds himself for war in the day when the chariots have such blazing lights (powerful electric headlights) that they resemble “flaming torches.”

Since this prophecy met its fulfillment in the day when the chariots are with “flaming torches”; when they run like lightning; when they jostle one against another in the highways and the broadways, and because the automotive traffic of today completely and perfectly answers the prophet's description of it, then there is no other conclusion but that Nahum's prophecy applies to advanced mechanization.

World War II is the only war in history for which the preparations described by Nahum were made and used at the time the “chariots” (vehicular traffic) moved with unprecedented speed, “lightning-like” speed, while motor traffic in air and sea, in city and countryside (streets and broadways), “justled one against another.” All these signs mark the time the war is fought; they leave no room for doubts. They all in perfect terms certify that Nahum predicts World War II.

Nahum beholds two great powers in conflict projected to a day when everything on wheels moves like “lightning.” These two powers are seen rising in their might against each other. The one power is identified as “he that dasheth in pieces,” and the other power, is “thy face.”

Though Nahum predicts the fall of “thy face” in connection with “he that dasheth in pieces,” it does not say that he that dashes in pieces is himself to finish her off, as one would naturally be inclined to conclude. It is now seen, though, that he that dasheth in pieces, himself was only to break or cause to be broken in pieces not only the allied nations but his own nation, too. In fact, the prophecy says that “his worthies” (the worthies of the one that dasheth in pieces), were not to win, but that they were to “stumble in their walk,” stumble while on their march to victory. (Nah. 2:5).

HE THAT DASHETH IN PIECES AND THY FACE

He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.” (Nah. 2:1). It is plain to see that the one “who dashes in pieces”, and who comes before “thy face” is the one who forces her to prepare, to militarize herself mightily. Her forced military preparations, agitated by him that dashes in pieces, start “thy face” on her downfall.

The prophet states that after the one that “dasheth in pieces” (Nah. 2:1) comes up before “thy face,” then it is that “thy face” makes her “loins strong,” fortifies her “power mightily” (Nah. 2:1) -- which, as the whole world knows, is just what took place when Hitler came against the allies: The allies, being unprepared to fight Hitler when he started dashing in pieces, they necessarily fortified their power mightily after the war began. All these facts prove that World War II is the war prophesied by Nahum and that Hitler was the one that “dasheth in pieces.

2“He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defense shall be prepared.” (Nah. 2:5).

His worthies (his mighty generals) stumble in their walk; that is, they make a mistake as they march on in the hope of victory. Because of their disastrous blunder, and in view of the fact that “he that dasheth in pieces” is mentioned no more in Nahum's book, it is evident that he loses the war by his stumbling.

Hitler caused his worthies to stumble by waging war against Russia while in combat with Great Britain, and going after Greece and Egypt rather than crossing the English Channel when England, unknown to him, was almost to give up. Thus his worthies stumbled and never rose again. Finally, Hitler disappeared and hostilities ceased.

Anyone can see that the war was not won for the good of Great Britain – “thy face,” but for Russia, and that following the cessation of hostilities, conditions have caused the world to consolidate into two great and hostile blocks -- the Western and the Eastern blocks, -- not to mention the wars and rumors of wars all around us. This happened because Great Britain allied with atheistic Russia, a government that is against God and His church. Thus Great Britain put greater trust in God's enemy than in God Himself, which is why the war is yet to be fought and because prophecy predicts the downfall of “thy face;” therefore, there must be another war that will bring this prophecy to it’s completion.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

“We are standing on the threshold of great and solemn events. Many of the prophecies are about to be fulfilled in quick succession. Every element of power is about to be set to work. Past history will be repeated; old controversies will arouse to new life, and peril will beset God's people on every side.

Intensity is taking hold of the human family. It is permeating everything upon the earth.” (TM 116.2).

Nahum's prophecy forewarns that World War II is not as yet completed. The world itself knows that it is not, and that the Allies, save Russia, won nothing, that they would have been better off to have given to Hitler part of Poland than to fight the war and then to lose out to Russia not only a part but whole of Poland and with it whole Eastern Europe. Moreover, Russia has now become their greater enemy than was Hitler. They did away with Hitler, but the hot war never completely ceased, and the cold war was soon added to it. Everyone knows that the war is not settled, that peace has not come, that the war may break out red hot any day. Moreover, there has been no official declaration as yet that the war is over.

No complete settlement with the powers which fought in the war has as yet been reached.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY APPLICATION

Nahum makes clear that in this conflict, God interposes against “thy face,” and that as a result, she is unable to withstand him who “dasheth in pieces.” Having set Himself to humble her, He, therefore, strengthens the arms of her enemy. Accordingly, “thy face” falls, not because she is weak and small nor because she is out-numbered and out-matched, but because God's purpose determines her downfall. In other words, the coalition which may have the greater resources and manpower, and which from the human point of view may seem sure to win, is, in this case, sure to lose.

If “thy face” is to fall, according to Nahum's prophecy (Nah.2:13), and if the one that starts the war, “he that dasheth in pieces,” is himself to lose out first, and seeing that Great Britain – (“thy face”) did not fall during World War II, then it only stands for reason that World War II is not over, and another modern “thy face” is to fall sometime in the future in fulfillment of prophecy. Also, there may be another he that dasheth in pieces to begin the fall of this power. This power, “thy face,” therefore, must be another world power, another regime that is to fall sometime in the future when the war begins again.

This last world power, that is to fall according to Inspiration, is also identified in Rev.13:11-18 and Dan.11:45. The Spirit of Prophecy states that this power that is brought to view in Daniel 11:45 is the same as the two-horned beast of Revelation 13. We quote: “Michael is to stand up at the time that the last power in chap. 11, comes to his end, and none shall help him. This power is the last that treads down the true church of God: and as the true church is still trodden down and cast out by all Christendom, it follows that the last oppressive power has not ‘come to his end’; and Michael has not stood up. This last power that treads down the saints is brought to view in Rev. 13:11-18.” (“A Word to the Little Flock,” pp. 8, 9).

The last power in Dan.11: 45 that shall come to his end, and none shall help him, is the same power in Nahum’s prophecy, which is to fall during the continuation of World War II, which will escalate into World War III. This power, “thy face,” that is to fall, that shall come to his end, is identified by inspiration as the United States of America in the secondary application, the primary application was great Britain as previously stated.

Seeing that Inspiration referred to Daniel 11: 45, “he shall come to his end, and none shall help him,” in reference to war, Daniel also must have prophesied of World War II, and its continuation when the last king of the north shall come to his end and none shall help him.

“The world is stirred with the spirit of war. The prophecies of the eleventh of Daniel have almost reached their final fulfillment.” (Mar 174).

WORLD WAR II IN LIGHT OF DANIEL’S PROPHECY

“But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain, yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.” (Dan. 11: 44, 45).

In this particular war, the king of the north destroys many because unpleasant news from out of the east

and from out of the north reach his ears. The king of the south is therefore not involved in it.

Since Hitler and Russia (the powers of the north) started War No. II in Poland, then Japan (the power of the east) joined it, and since Turkey, the king of the south kept out of it, it is self-evident that the war of Dan. 11: 44 is World War II into which the tidings here mentioned dragged England (the king of the north) into it. World War II, therefore, is positively the war predicted in Dan. 11: 44, 45, the last battle of Daniel eleven. Moreover, the fact that only verse 44 so far has been fulfilled, that the king is yet to

come to his end, is positive proof that World War II is yet to be finished, and another king of the north, the Two Horn Beast, will engage in a war, in which “He shall come to his end and none shall help him.” We, therefore, find ourselves living between verses 44, and 45 of Daniel eleven.

What will cause her downfall? (“he shall come to his end”). For the answer, let us turn to Isaiah 31, where this same power in Nahum (thy face), Daniel (king of the north), and Revelation (two-horn beast), is again brought to view by a different title and regime, “Assyria.” Here we are told precisely what causes her to fall, the fall of antitypical Assyria--The United States of America and her allies.

THE FALL OF “THY FACE”—ANTITYPICAL ASSYRIA

“Turn ye unto Him from Whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted. For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin. Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited.” (Isa. 31:6-8).

This Assyria is to fall and be devoured, but not by the sword of a mean man, not by him who dashes in pieces. The fact that God's people are admonished to turn unto Him against Whom ancient Israel revolted shows again that Inspiration is speaking to antitypical Israel, to God's people in the Christian era.

The Assyrian shall thus fall, not at the sword of a mighty man, and not of a mean man, but “through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.” (Isa. 30:31).

The prophet is looking down the stream of time, to a time of a thorough reformation, a time in which only those who forsake every sin and embody Truth and righteousness will be left in the church. None others will be found in the congregation of the Lord. Then Assyria shall fall, and thus shall her yoke be removed from the neck of God's people. The Assyrian is to fall because of his wickedness and because God's people return to Him because of a thorough revival and reformation.

Moreover, since this antitypical Assyria's fall liberates God's people, and since from then on the wicked no longer pass through their midst, the time and the events are solidly clinched: All these predictions come to pass in the time of the purification of the church, in the Judgment day of the living, during the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

When God's people cast aside all their idols and entirely turn to Him, then it is that antitypical Assyria falls. Then it is that the wicked are removed from the midst of the people of God, the Assyrian yoke is broken, and the servants of God, evidently the first fruits, the 144,000, stand with the Lamb.

Assyria will fall in the war predicted in Zech14:2. “For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished, and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.”

The predicted war is against Jerusalem, in which all nations participate. In that war, a part of the people in Jerusalem go into captivity, but the rest remain in the city. As the warring nations besiege the city and rifle the houses, also ravish the women, they are by no means righteous nations; they, therefore, must be Communist and Arab nations. World War III, thus will be fought about the holy land. In that battle, the nations will defeat the rulers of the Promised Land. This event is premillennial; in this war, Christ gathers all nations against Jerusalem to battle, whereas in the earth made new, Satan gathers the wicked to overthrow the New Jerusalem.

5 THE CHURCH’S LIBERATION FROM ASSYRIAN YOKE DURING THE WAR

“Thus saith the Lord; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when

he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more. For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.” (Nahum 1:12, 13).

This person (“thee”), whom the Lord has already chastened, obviously cannot be the Assyrian king or nation aforementioned because the Lord is delivering this one, while He is beating the Assyrians to their knees at the hands of him “that dasheth in pieces.” Just who this third character (“thee”) here introduced may be, is immediately established by Isaiah in his correlative prophecy concerning this same Assyria:

“And it shall come to pass in that day,” declares the prophet, “that his [Assyria's] burden shall be taken away from off thy [Judah's] shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” (Isa. 10:27). [ ] added.

Immediately we see that in the revealing light of this scripture, the one (“thee”) who, in both cases, is set free in the time of Assyria's fall, proves to be the church (Judah) liberated from Gentile (Assyrian) rule. Conclusively, therefore, Isaiah clarifies Nahum's prophecy as referring to the church's liberation from the last-day Assyrian yoke. The fact, though, that the church, as Nahum says, is not only to be relieved from affliction and freed from bondage but is also to be sentenced to death (Nah. 1:14), creates a paradox! Inspiration, however, quickly clears it again through Isaiah. Speaking of the church, he declares:

“And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto My chosen: for the Lord God shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name.” (Isa. 65:15).

Plainly, therefore, in the time when Assyria crumbles, the Lord is to perform a dual work among His professed people, some of whom will be made free because of their faithfulness, and some of whom will be slain because of their wickedness. The delivered ones will then be called by another name.

The time of this “work” is termed “harvest.” Matt. 13:30. Therefore, up to this separation, the tares (those who are to be slain) and the wheat (those who are to be delivered) together comprise the membership of Laodicea (the last of the seven churches -- Rev. 3:14-18), the church just before the “tares” are forever separated from the “wheat” (Matt. 13:30). Very obviously, then, the penitent Laodiceans are separated from the impenitent ones during Assyria's fall and then are liberated from her rule.

So it is that while Nahum predicts liberation and peace for God's faithful people, he predicts disaster and humiliation for antitypical Assyria and for the wicked in the church. Assyria here in prophecy, therefore, is not ancient Assyria, but another widespread power that exists “in the time of the end” (Dan. 12: 9, 10), the time in which its yoke is removed from God's people.

We do not as yet see how the prophecy will fulfill itself, we are, however, plainly told that at the time

“Assyria” falls, the Lord will free His people not only from the sinners in their midst but also from the gentile rule.

6From this, we see that Assyria under discussion exists in the time of the end, the time in which the great and dreadful day of the Lord takes place. This Assyria, therefore, is an antitype of ancient Assyria, just as the Babylon of Revelation 17 and 18 is an antitype of ancient Babylon. Assyria, charges Inspiration,

is a rejoicing city that dwells carelessly, that says in her heart, “I am, and there is none beside me.” (Zeph. 2:15). (See Rev.17: 4,5).

SUMMARY

Let us now consider the already historical facts: Hitler made his preparation for war in an era when the chariots were raging in the streets, running lightning-like, and jostling one against another in the broadways. Hitler stumbled, as it were, by starting a war against Russia while he was still engaged in war with Great Britain; although Germany lost the war, rather than taking deeper root since the downfall of Hitler, England was instead wearing away, and the crashing sounds of her empire have become louder with each passing day; Hitler's war has dashed in pieces the whole world, and new chips and cracks are heard and seen right along -- that there are new partisan politics from within and from without in every nation and people.

Since Nahum's description of the city and country traffic at the time this war in prophecy was fulfilled, it perfectly fits the conditions of World War II. We are assured, therefore, that the war which Hitler began will be finished when antitypical Assyria falls, and when her yoke is removed from the neck of God's people. From then on, the wicked shall no more be found in the congregation of the righteous.

What is the overall purpose of Nahum's prophecy? It is to enlighten God's people of the signs of the times, to make them aware that “the great and dreadful day of the Lord” is at hand, that the purification of the church, the “Judgment in the house of God” (1 Pet. 4:17) is soon to take place, that the wicked shall not much longer be in their midst, that the redemption of the righteous is at hand, that they must not fail to perform their God-given duties. Indeed, Nahum's prophecy identifies God's people of today under the Assyrian yoke and points to their liberation.

Most important of all, though, the prophet Nahum tells that all these things take place in our day and that the fall of Assyria takes place while God's people are turning to Him, while revival and reformation are successfully carried by him who “publisheth peace” (Nah. 1:15). If we, therefore, fail to take hold of the message, and if we fail to reform as it recommends, then it is not possible to survive the day of the Lord.

A BRIEF HISTORY FOR THE RUSSIA AND UKRAINE WAR

A free Ukraine: In 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. Ukraine and Russia, which both had been part of the Soviet Union, became independent countries.

Fast forward to 2013. Ukraine’s president, Viktor Yanukovych, wanted Ukraine to be loyal to Russia.

So he decided not to sign a trade agreement to bring Ukraine closer to Europe. Ukrainians protested, kicked Yanukovych out of office, and elected a government that favored Europe rather than Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that despite these protests, most Ukrainians wanted ties with Russia. He also worried that Ukraine would join a military alliance with the U.S. and Europe that would be a threat to Russia.

7In 2014, Russia took over an area in southern Ukraine called Crimea. It also sent soldiers and weapons to eastern Ukraine, claiming to be helping people who wanted to be part of Russia. In the eight years since then, about 14,000 people have died, and 1 million people have fled to escape the fighting.

The current war: In February 2022, Putin again claimed that Ukrainians and Russians are one people.

He sees Ukrainians and Russians as brother nations and says that because Russia is the older brother, it

should get to be in charge.

Most Ukrainians disagree. They have been inspired by the words of their president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He told Putin that Ukrainians want peace, but that if they need to, they will defend their country’s independence.

Putin invaded, and this time his plan is to take over the entire country. Ukrainians are now fighting the Russian army, trying to defeat what they say is an occupation. In Russia, the people had no say about whether to invade. Many are protesting against it. Many families have both Russian and Ukrainian members. Because of this, a lot of people on both sides of the border do not want to fight a war against each other. The United States and much of Europe are on the side of the Ukrainians. They believe Ukraine should be able to decide its own future.

CURRENT EVENTS THAT MAY FULFILL PROPHECY

Because the bone of contention among the angry nations of today is the world's markets, and because the churches are threatened by the totalitarian governments, they will be thus urged to press together in order to preserve Christianity. The fact is thereby evidenced, that the time is nigh for the arrival of the predicted world-wide religious-political-commercial empire,--the mark of the beast, the supposed remedy for the world's ills.

Now is seen that the prophecy of Revelation 17 (woman sitting on the scarlet colored beast), the last scene in the drama played by the nations, is about to be enacted. The warring nations are already divided into two distinct ideological camps: On the one side are the democratic governments, while on the other side are the totalitarian. If the latter continues successfully to prosecute their relentless conquest for world-dominion and sovereignty, the only victorious way out for the Christian nations, as they humanly view their plight, will be to surrender their power to the church. For, seeing Catholic set against Catholics, and Protestants against Protestant, in mortal combat, they will in dread fear be inspired to saddle the beast, and to re-establish the church as its driver in order to free themselves from the shackles of totalitarianism, and to safeguard Christianity. They will see victory in this stratagem, if it be denied them in war, for the very evident reason that many of the millions of communicants of these churches, in every army of the totalitarian states allied in the conflict, will honor the dictates of the church, above those of their respective governments.

Such a combination of circumstances will result in a replication of the international church-and-state

rule of the Middle Ages and will relegate to the scrap heap the world's finest instrument of human liberty -- the divinely inspired Constitution of the United States of America. Since this development will make the world's ills worse, it will signalize that the four angels have let loose the winds, and that the 144,000 Israelites are sealed. (Rev. 7:3-8).

TIME AND CHANCE SOLVE MYSTERIES

Time and chance are still the most trustworthy witnesses and the best disclosers of mysteries. No one knows if the war between Russia and Ukraine will escalate into World War III. At the present movement, Putin is acting like another “he that dasheth in pieces” by trying to take control of the surrounding nations. Time will reveal what the outcome will be. Thus far, the war seems to be escalating more and more each day; the allied nations (UN), along with the Democrats and republicans, are all in unison regarding sanctioning Russia. The unity among the United Nations is a signpost for us as Seventh-day Adventists to realize that the setting up of the new world order, the mark of the beast system (Rev. 13:11-18), is right at the door, along with the investigative judgment of the living.

Before the fulfillment of the above events, antitypical Assyria -- The United States of America, will fall, come to its end, defeated, according to Nahum’s and Daniel’s prophecy. The fall of Assyria does not suggest that she has lost her world dominance; on the contrary, she has now transcended from the Assyrian period to that of the Babylonian period. This dictates a new form of government when the two horn beasts shall speak as a dragon. What does that mean?

THE FINAL WORLD GOVERNMENT – THE NEW WORLD ORDER

“And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand,

or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” (Rev. 13:15-17).

The whole world will bow to the mark of the beast system when it is implemented by the two-horn beast – the United States of America. One may ask, if antitypical Assyria loses in the war to communist nations, how then could she still acquire world power? The answer is found in Rev. 17.

“And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.” (Rev. 17:1-3).

... “the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.” (Rev. 17:12, 13).

In verse 12, we are told that the ten horns receive power as kings one hour with the beast. And gave their power and strength unto the beast. Rev. 17:17 says; “God hath put in their hearts to fulfill His will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.”

God, therefore, for the sake of His own will put in the hearts of the communists, or communist-like powers (the ten horns of the scarlet-colored beast who hate the woman, hate religion, as does communism) to “give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.” During this one prophetic hour, God’s people will be called out of Babylon. (Rev. 18:1-4). After the one prophetic hour, the ten horns destroy the woman.

“And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. (Rev. 17:16).

The “ten horns” of the scarlet-colored beast (the rulers which she dominates for an hour) ultimately “shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.” (Rev. 17:16). Thus at length, they shall unseat her forever, and the system which she symbolizes, the “image of the beast,” shall be demolished. At this resounding crash of Babylon, "the kings of the earth...shall bewail her, and lament for her,...standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise anymore.” (Rev. 18: 9 -11).

The scarlet-colored beast, therefore, is the symbol of the world government into which the United Nations will finally evolve.

Significant changes are on the horizon, and the final movements will be rapid ones. The Pandemic, Global warming, Digital currencies seem to be the reason and future system to usher in the new world order. May God give us the courage, strength, and faith to go through these testing times ahead of us.

Soon strife among the nations will break out with an intensity that we do not now anticipate. The present is a time of overwhelming interest to all living...In the last scenes of this earth's history, war will rage. There will be pestilence, plague, and famine. The waters of the deep will overflow their boundaries. Property and life will be destroyed by fire and flood. We should be preparing for the mansions that Christ has gone to prepare for them that love Him. There is a rest from earth's conflict.” (Mar. 174).
