A MESSAGE FROM GOD TO THE LAODICEAN CHURCH

THE MYSTERY OF THE SEVEN STARS AND CANDLESTICKS

“Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter; the mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in My right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.” (Revelation 1:19-20).

These “seven churches” are symbolized by “seven candlesticks,” and the leadership of the same churches by “seven angels.” E.G. White, whom the church recognizes as a messenger of God, as recorded in Rev.14:9, interpreted the above prophecy by saying;

“God's ministers are symbolized by the seven stars.” “The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in different periods of the Christian Era. The number 7 indicates completeness, and is symbolic of the fact that the messages extend to the end of time, while the symbols used reveal the condition of the church at different periods in the history of the world.” (GW p13), (AA p 586).

In addressing the angel “star” of the church of Laodicea, John continued by saying;

“And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” (Rev.3: 14-19).

Note the message is addressed to the angel (leadership) and not to the candlestick (the church as a body.) Therefore, the condemnation is not to the candlestick but the angel in charge. Out of all the seven churches recorded in Rev. 2, 3, the angel (ministry) of the church of Laodicea is in the worst of condition, lukewarm, neither cold nor hot. John, therefore, is addressing and identifying the condition of the leadership of the Laodicean church, “the angel.” If the ministry is in a lukewarm state, the majority in the church is likely to be the same. E.G. White confirms this by saying;

“The people will seldom rise higher than their minister.” “Satan is constantly endeavoring to attract attention to man in the place of God. He leads the people to look to bishops, to pastors, to professors of theology, as their guides, instead of searching the Scriptures to learn their duty for themselves. Then, by controlling the minds of these leaders, he can influence the multitudes according to his will.” (GW p342), (GC 595.2)

THE CHURCH OF LAODICEA

“The message to the Laodicean church is highly applicable to us as a people.” “The message to the Laodicean church is applicable to our condition.” (MS 33, 1894), (RH July 23, 1889).

The very name Laodicea, compounded of the two Greek words lao and dekei, the one meaning “people,” the other meaning “judgment,” the two in one meaning; the people declaring judgment. The church therefore, which declares, “Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come” (Rev. 14:7), is evidently the one called Laodicea. And it is almost as well known outside

Seventh-day Adventist circles as within, that the Seventh-day Adventist church is endeavoring to carry the judgment message of Revelation 14:7, and is therefore unchallenged in her claim to the title, Laodicea.

Although the above statement cannot be disputed that the Seventh-Day Adventist church is the only organization in the world that is proclaiming the judgment message in it’s correct application in fulfillment of it’s title, Laodicea – people proclaiming judgment, the 2300 day prophecy in Dan. 8:14, the fact remains: the ministry and the laity are in a lukewarm, distasteful condition, and they are about to be spewed out of God’s mouth unless they repent.

2The question to be asked at this time is, what would have caused this last remnant church to be in such a predicament that would cause God to reject them, and what is it that they should repent from? To find the answer to these most intriguing questions, it is essential to identify the different charges brought against them. John answered the reasons for the condemnations.

“Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.” (Rev 3:17-19).

By the words, “I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing,” the church of Laodicea is saying that they has all the truth for God’s people. This Laodicean attitude is condemned by the servant of the Lord, E.G. White.

ADDITIONAL LIGHT

“We must not think, ‘Well, we have all the truth, we understand the main pillars of our faith, and we may rest on this knowledge.’ The truth is an advancing truth, and we must walk in the increasing light...Some have asked me if I thought there was any more light for the people of God. Our minds have become so narrow that we do not seem to understand that the Lord has a mighty work to do for us.

Increasing light is to shine upon us; for ‘the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day...New light will ever be revealed on the word of God to him who is in living connection with the Sun of Righteousness. Let no one come to the conclusion that there is no more truth to be revealed. (CW 33,34).

“No one should claim that he has all the light there is for God's people. The Lord will not tolerate this.

He has said, ‘I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.’ Even if all our leading men should refuse light and truth, that door will still remain open. The Lord will raise up men who will give the people the message for this time.” (TM 107). (See CSW 25).

“The great danger with our people has been that of depending upon men and making flesh their arms.

Those who have not been in the habit of searching the Bible for themselves, or weighing evidence, have confidence in the leading men and accept the decisions they make; and thus many will reject the very messages God sends to His people, if these leading brethren do not accept them.” (TM 106,107).

SPEWED OUT OF HIS MOUTH

Because of the attitude of the church of Laodicea in believing that they are “rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing;” and by their refusal “to buy of me (God) gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see,” the only alternative is for God to spew them out of His mouth if they choose to continue in their Laodicean

condition by rejecting the additional messages that God has brought to the church through instruments of His choosing.

In addressing the condition of the Laodicean ministry, the servant of the Lord said;

3“What greater deception can come upon human minds than a confidence that they are right when they are all wrong! The message of the True Witness finds the people of God in a sad deception, yet honest in that deception. They know not that their condition is deplorable in the sight of God. While those addressed are flattering themselves that they are in an exalted spiritual condition, the message of the True Witness breaks their security by the startling denunciation of their true condition of spiritual blindness, poverty, and wretchedness. The testimony, so cutting and severe, cannot be a mistake, for it is the True Witness who speaks, and His testimony must be correct.” (3T 252, 253).

“The message to the Laodiceans is applicable to Seventh-day Adventists who have had great light and have not walked in the light. It is those who have made great profession, but have not kept in step with their Leader, that will be spewed out of His mouth unless they repent.” (2SM p66).

“There are those who, though professedly serving God, are witnessing against Him. To them the message to the Laodicean church is given. Christ says to them, ‘I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot.’ When the avenging angel shall pass through the land, Christ cannot say of them,

‘Touch them not. I have graven them upon the palms of my hands.’ No; of these halfhearted ones He says, ‘I will spew them out of my mouth. They are offensive to me’” (Letter 44, 1903).

Based upon the above statements, it would appear as if it would be an impossible task to help the church out of their Laodicean condition; why? Because they know not that their condition is deplorable in the sight of God. They are wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked, and know it not.

“I am filled with sadness when I think of our condition as a people. The Lord has not closed heaven to us, but our own course of continual backsliding has separated us from God. Pride, covetousness, and love of the world have lived in the heart without fear of banishment or condemnation. Grievous and presumptuous sins have dwelt among us. And yet the general opinion is that the church is flourishing and that peace and spiritual prosperity are in all her borders.

The church has turned back from following Christ her Leader and is steadily retreating toward Egypt. Yet few are alarmed or astonished at their want of spiritual power. Doubt, and even disbelief of the testimonies of the Spirit of God, is leavening our churches everywhere. Satan would have it thus.

Ministers who preach self instead of Christ would have it thus. The testimonies are unread and unappreciated. God has spoken to you. Light has been shining from His word and from the testimonies, and both have been slighted and disregarded. The result is apparent in the lack of purity and devotion and earnest faith among us.” “Daily the church is becoming converted to the world.” (5T 217), (8T 119).

Over many years, various opportunities were presented to the church to accept the additional messages that God has sent. Still, without fail, they have repeatedly rejected the messages from God.

Proofs are provided below as evidence of the charges.

THE REJECTION OF ADDITION LIGHT BY THE ANGEL OF LAODICEA

“The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people. This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God. Many have lost sight of Jesus….This is the message that God commanded to be given to the world.” (TM pp. 91, 92).

The message of justification through faith was first preached by Habakkuk, then by Paul, Martin Luther, and again by Jones and Waggoner. Because this crucial salvific truth has also been lost sight of, God restored it in 1888. However, Satan realizing the validity of this truth, influenced the leadership to reject it.

“In 1888 the general conference held at Minneapolis, the angel of Rev 18 came down to do his work, and was ridiculed, criticized, and rejected.” E.G. WHITE in “Taking up a reproach.”

“The true religion, the only religion of the Bible, that teaches forgiveness only through the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour, that advocates righteousness by the faith of the Son of God, has been slighted, spoken against, ridiculed, and rejected.” (TM p 468).

“I shall never again, I think, be called to stand under the direction of the Holy Spirit as I stood Minneapolis. The presence of Jesus was with me. All assembled in that meeting had an opportunity to place themselves on the side of truth by receiving the Holy Spirit, which was sent by God in such a rich current of love and mercy. But in the rooms occupied by some of our people were heard ridicule, criticism, jeering, and laughter. The manifestations of the Holy Spirit were attributed to fanaticism.... The scenes which took place at that meeting made the God of heaven ashamed to call those who took part in them His brethren. All this the heavenly Watcher noticed, and it was written in the book of God’s remembrance.” -- Special Testimony to Review and Herald Office, pp. 16, 17, written in 1896.

“I saw that Jones and Waggoner had their counterpart in Joshua and Caleb. As the children of Israel stoned the spies with literal stones, you have stoned these brethren with stones of sarcasm and ridicule.

I saw that you willfully rejected what you knew to be truth, just because it was too humiliating to your dignity. I saw some of you in your tents mimicking and making all manner of fun of these two brethren. I also saw that if you had accepted their message, we would have been in the kingdom two years from that date, but now we have to go back into the wilderness and there stay forty years.”

(GCB May 9, 1892) (Melbourne, Australia).

“Says Elder Taylor G. Bunch in his booklet: ‘Just as Israel 'murmured in their tents' and criticized God's chosen leader who was endeavoring to lead them into the promised land, so modern Israel reenacted those scenes at Minneapolis in 1888....It must have been as terrible in the sight of the Lord as the rebellion at Kadesh-barnea, for it resulted in the same punishment, a turning back into the wilderness.’ (Forty Years in the Wilderness p. 15).

“Some have been cultivating hatred against the men whom God has commissioned to bear a special message to the world. They began this satanic work at Minneapolis. Afterward, when they saw and felt the demonstration of the Holy Spirit, testifying that the message was of God, they hated it the more, because it was a testimony against them.... Yet these men have been holding positions of trust, and have been molding the work after their own similitude, as far as they possibly could.” (TM p. 79, 80).

“The whole of Revelation 18 will be fulfilled in the glorious closing of this work. It hasn’t yet been fulfilled, and the light of the FOURTH ANGEL’S message began to shine in that strange and impressive

5way at Minneapolis. The only reasonable conclusion is that the light was put out by human instrumentalities.” (E.G. WHITE, LETTER 106).

When did that message of the righteousness of Christ begin with us as a people? [One or two in the audience: ‘Three or four years ago.’] Which was it, three? Or four? [Congregation: ‘four’], Yes four. Where was it? [Congregation: ‘Minneapolis’] What then did the leading brethren reject Minneapolis? [Some in the congregation: ‘The loud cry’]...What did the brethren in that fearful position in which they stood, rejected at Minneapolis? They rejected the latter rain-the loud cry-of the third angel’s message” (GCB, 1893 p183).

“An unwillingness to yield up preconceived opinions, and to accept this truth, lay at the foundation of a large share of the opposition manifested at Minneapolis against the Lord's message through Brethren

(E.J.) Waggoner and (A.T.) Jones. By exciting that opposition Satan succeeded in shutting away from our people, in a great measure, the special power of the Holy Spirit that God longed to impart to them.

The enemy prevented them from obtaining that efficiency that might have been theirs in carrying the truth to the world, as the apostles proclaimed it after the day of Pentecost. The light that is to lighten the whole earth with its glory was resisted, and by the action of our own brethren has been in a great degree kept away from the world.” (1SM pp 234, 235).

THE RETURN AND REJECTION OF THE FOURTH ANGELS MESSAGE

After the official announcement that the General Conference had rejected God's “most precious message,” the Lord sent another message, which was handed in writing to thirty members of the general Conference Committee while assembled at the 1930 San Francisco Conference session. It is interesting to note, E.G. White stated, if the church had accepted the Loud Cry message in 1888, we would been in the kingdom two years from that date (1890), instead, we will have to wander in the wilderness for forty years. Forty years from 1890, takes us to 1930. In 1930 just such a message came again to the Seventh-day Adventist church; the loud cry message, and the investigative judgment of the living, and again it too was rejected, as predicted by E.G. White and A.T. Jones as the following references will prove.

“In 1888 the general conference held at Minneapolis, the angel of Rev 18 came down to do his work, and was ridiculed, criticized, and rejected, and when the message he brings AGAIN will swell into a loud cry it will be ridiculed and spoken against and rejected by the majority.” E.G. WHITE in “Taking up a reproach.”

“That [the 1888 experience] however, is but a sample. There will be things TO COME that will be more surprising than that was to those at Minneapolis, more surprising than anything we have yet seen.

And brethren we will be required to receive and preach that truth. But unless you and I have every fiber of that spirit rooted out of our hearts we will treat that MESSAGE and the MESSENGER by whom it is

sent, as God has declared we have treated this OTHER message.” (G.C.B, 1893 p 185) A.T. Jones.

“I have no specific time of which to speak when the outpouring of the Holy Spirit will take place-- when the mighty angel will come down from heaven, and unite with the third angel in closing up the work for this world; my message is that our only safety is in being ready for the heavenly refreshing, having our lamps trimmed and burning.--The Review and Herald, March 29, 1892. (1SM p 192.1).

6“The prophecies in the eighteenth of Revelation will soon be fulfilled. During the proclamation of the third angel's message, ‘another angel’ is to ‘come down from heaven, having great power,’ and the earth is to be ‘lightened with his glory.’” (Mar. p 218).

“We are to throw aside our narrow, selfish plans, remembering that we have a work of the largest magnitude and highest importance. In doing this work we are sounding the first, second, and third angel's messages, and are thus being prepared for the coming of that other angel from heaven who is to lighten the earth with his glory.” (4T p 406, 1900).

“The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth.” (RH Nov. 22, 1892). (1SM p 363).

The multiplicity of references provided clearly stated there is to come, a return of the FOURTH ANGEL that was first rejected at the 1888 Minneapolis session by the General Conference leaders.

This other messenger is likewise identified in Rev 18:1 as “another angel” who joins the third angel as it swells to a loud cry. Both E.G. White and A.T. Jones prophesied that the fourth angel would return and would likewise be rejected. This other messenger – the fourth angel, is identified as the antitypical Elijah that is to come. He represents the last messenger before Christ's second advent, as John the Baptist represented the last prophet before Christ's first advent.

“Prophecy must be fulfilled. The Lord says: ‘Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.’ Somebody is to come in the spirit and power of Elijah, and when he appears, men may say: ‘You are too earnest, you do not interpret the Scriptures in the proper way. Let me tell you how to teach your message.” (TM p. 475, 1890).

Sister White does not mean to say that she is that prophet Elijah but plainly says a prophet must come, and it is said to be a prophet with the “same spirit and power of Elijah.” Elijah's work in the days of Ahab, king of Israel, was to prove to Israel that they had apostatized (See 5T p 217). The spirit of Elijah was a spirit against idolatry, and his power was a power to destroy those who led in idolatry, and to bring about purity. Such was the spirit and power of Elijah. Therefore, the message of antitypical Elijah is a message of purification or cleansing, the message of the investigative judgment of the living as recorded in Ezek. 9. (See 5T 207-216).

THE REJECTION OF THE ANGEL OF THE CHURCH OF LAODICEA

Because the General Conference leaders rejected the messages of 1888 and 1901, the servant of the Lord said they were no longer considered to be the voice of God.

Speaking to the S.D.A. leadership, the servant of the Lord says: “You have no right to manage, unless you manage in God's order. Are you under the control of God? Do you see your responsibility to him?... That these men should stand in a sacred place to be as the voice of God to the people, as we once believed the General Conference to be, – that is past. What we want now is a reorganization.” --

General Conference Bulletin, 34th Session, Vol. 4, Extra No. 1, April 3, 1901, p. 25, Cols. 1 and 2.

7In the year 1901, Sis. White stated that the General Conference was no longer the voice of God; what we want is a reorganization. We will now quote what changes were made at that session regarding revival and reformation-reorganization.

“In 1901 Sis. White spoke on General Conference matters and organizations’ declaring that there must be ‘an entirely new organization’... To have this Conference pass on and close up as the Conferences have done, with the same manipulating, with the very same tone, and the same order – God forbid! God wants a change, and it is high time. From the light that I have, as it was presented to me in figures.

There was a narrow compass here; there within that narrow compass is a king-like, a kingly ruling power. God means what He says and He says, ‘I want a change here. - The king is in there, and these others are secondary. He wants the Holy Ghost King.’ In this understanding, a (new Constitution)

entirely was adopted. Under this Constitution, the General Conference Committee was composed of a large number of men, with the power to organize itself by choosing a chairman, etc. No president of the Gen. Conf. was chosen; nor was any provided for. The presidency of the Gen. Conf. was eliminated to escape a centralized power, a one-manpower, a kingship and a monarchy.”

“(Sis. White wrote the work of reorganization and printed it in ‘Words Of Truth Series No 31, extra May 1901’ for all the people to study.” “Some History, Some Experiences, and Some Facts.” pg. 8-9.

DISORGANIZATION – 1903

“It was not long before the whole spirit and principle of the General Conference Organization and affairs began to be reversed again... a new constitution was framed to fit and to uphold the usurpation.

This constitution was carried to the General Conference of 1903 at Oakland, Calif.” Ibid p 11.

The 1903 GC session reverted in having a president again...“a new constitution was framed to fit and to uphold the usurpation.

These revelatory statements conclusively prove that after the historical General Conference session at Minneapolis in 1888, when the leaders rejected the “Loud Cry Message,” the fourth angel of Rev. 18:1, along with the counsel given to them in 1901 regarding reorganization, the Lord did not regard the General Conference decisions as the voice of God. (See 9T p260, 261). Although they rejected God’s messengers, He still recognizes the Seventh Day Adventist church as His remnant church.

However, because the General Conference leadership believes they are rich and increased with goods, no need of more light (the return of the loud cry message), God will nevertheless, in the last and final mighty movement, take control of the work Himself through instruments of His appointed choice.

THE CHURCH OF LAODICEA UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP

“We have been inclined to think that where there are no faithful ministers there can be no true Christians, but this is not the case. God has promised that where the shepherds are not true, He will take charge of the flock Himself. God has never made the flock wholly dependent upon human instrumentalities...Those who have rendered supreme homage to ‘science falsely so called’ will not be the leaders then. Those who have trusted to intellect, genius, or talent will not then stand at the head of rank and file. They did not keep pace with the light. Those who have proved themselves unfaithful will not then be entrusted with the flock. In the last solemn work few great men will be engaged. They are self-sufficient, independent of God, and He cannot use them. The Lord has faithful servants, who in the shaking, testing time will be disclosed to view.” (5T p 80).

“God will use ways and means by which it will be seen that He is taking the reins in His own hands.

The workers will be surprised by the simple means that He will use to bring about and perfect His work of righteousness.” (TM 300).

“The rebuke of the Lord will rest upon those who would bar the way, that clearer light shall not come to the people. Great work is to be done, and God sees that our leading men have need of more light, that they may unite with the messengers whom He sends to accomplish the work that He designs shall be done. The Lord has raised up messengers and endued them with His Spirit, and has said, ‘Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.’ [Isaiah 58:1.] Let no one run the risk of interposing between the people and the message of Heaven. This message will go to the people; and if there were no voice among men to give it, the very stones would cry out.” (GW 304.2, 1892).

“As never before, we should pray not only that laborers may be sent forth into the great harvest field, but that we may have a clear conception of truth, so that when the messengers of truth shall come, we may accept the message and respect the messenger.” (6T 420.3, 1900).

“When light goes forth to lighten the earth, instead of coming up to the help of the Lord, they will want to bind about His work to meet their narrow ideas. Let me tell you that the Lord will work in this last work in a manner very much out of the common order of things, and in a way that will be contrary to any human planning. There will be those among us who will always want to control the work of God, to dictate even what movements shall be made when the work goes forward under the direction of the angel who joins the third angel in the message to be given to the world. (TM 300).

“The angel who unites in the proclamation of the third angel's message is to lighten the whole earth with his glory. A work of world-wide extent and unwonted power is here foretold. The advent movement of 1840-44 was a glorious manifestation of the power of God; the first angel's message was carried to every missionary station in the world, and in some countries, there was the greatest religious interest that has been witnessed in any land since the Reformation of the sixteenth century; but these are to be exceeded by the mighty movement under the last warning of the third angel.” (GC 611.1).

The first angels' message was to take the Gospel to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people (See Rev.14:6), this, however, never came to fruition. After the great disappointment in 1844, the sweet and bitter experience, the Advent believers were told to prophesy again to many, peoples, nations, tongues and kings (See Rev. 10:11). This is the commission that was given to the third angel, whereas, the commission given to the fourth angel is to take the Gospel to all the world (See Matt.24:14), this will be accomplished during the loud cry when all the three angels messages will be proclaimed as recorded in Rev. 14: 6 – 10, in addition with the angel in Rev. 18:1. The final outcome? John the revelatory beheld a great multitude that no man could number from all nations, kindreds, people and tongues. This parallels with Rev. 18:1,2, the calling out of God’s people out of Babylon, the final message to be given to the world, then shall the end come. (See GC p603 – 612).

“Then I saw another mighty angel commissioned to descend to the earth, to unite his voice with the third angel, and give power and force to his message. Great power and glory were imparted to the angel, and as he descended, the earth was lightened with his glory. The light which attended this angel penetrated everywhere, as he cried mightily, with a strong voice, ‘Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.’ The message of the fall of Babylon, as given by the second angel, is repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which have been entering the churches since 1844. The work of this angel comes in at the right time to join in the last great work of the third angel's message as it swells to a loud cry.” (EW 277).
