About the MBMS Library

The MBMS Library is funded by the generosity of the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF) and the Manhattan Beach Middle School PTSA.   With their support, the MBMS Library offers exceptional reading and research resources to our students and staff.

The MBMS Library serves the students and staff of Manhattan Beach Middle School. The school library program seeks to instill a love of reading, inspire life-long learning, foster independent library use, and increase information literacy.

MBMS students use the library to check out books, conduct research, study, and develop information literacy skills. The library's physical collection consists of approximately 13,000 items, including fiction and nonfiction books for all levels of readers, reference materials, and magazines. MBMS also offers e-books and audiobooks via the Sora Digital Library platform.  The school provides a textbook collection that students can check out or use for study in the library.

During regular In-Person learning (meaning: not in-person/Hybrid, or Covid emergency), the library is open before school, in-between classes, at Nutrition and Lunch, and after school.  During class time, the library is open to Teachers, Classes, PE Students doing assignments, and Students seeking Tech assistance.

The library is open during Nutrition and Lunch for quiet study, book check-out/return, Tech help, and printing.

Technology devices may only be used for studying or reading.  There is no personal technology use in the library.  Personal technology can be defined as cell phones, video games, movies, YouTube videos, etc.

During In-Person learning [2023-2024 academic year], the MBMS Library is open as follows:

> 7:45am -- 4:00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

> 7:45am -- 2:30pm on Wednesday (early release, weekly).

> The Library will close at 1:00pm on Early Release days (short days).

The Library is closed on evenings, weekends, and school holidays. The Library may also be closed unexpectedly during the day or after school for classes, meetings, or special events. Please watch for signs in the library main door windows for notices of different operating hours.

The MBMS Library is staffed with one Staff library media specialist. During regular In-Person learning, Parent volunteers sometimes assist with special projects.

Circulation Information:

Materials are checked out for three weeks and may be renewed once if there are no pending holds on the item.  Please be sure to return or renew items when they are due in order to give other students access to them.  There are no fees for overdue books; however, no new items may be checked out until the overdue item is returned.

Textbook/Library Book Barcode Policy:

When a student checks out a Textbook or a Library Book, the barcode on the item is scanned into the Follett Destiny Circulation system and the number is matched with the particular student.  At return time, the EXACT SAME BARCODE item must be presented to match what is in the student record.  If the student returns an item and the barcode does not match what was recorded at check-out, the student will owe a fine to replace the item.

*This policy is to prevent students from swapping Classroom copies of textbooks or library books to pass off as their own.

Student Use Printer:

There is one student-use printer located in the library.  Use is on a first-come, first-served basis and is subject to availability of ink and paper due to heavy use.  Sometimes the printer malfunctions and cannot be repaired quickly.  During Nutrition and Lunch, the line to use the printer can get very long.  The printer is not wireless and requires the student to physically log on to the computer wired to the printer.  Students can only print documents from their Google accounts.  Students should limit their printing to 5 pages or less per day and documents should be related to school assignments only.  No personal printing is allowed.
