Inclusive Strategies

We recognize that differentiation is necessary based on the cognitive, linguistic and cultural diversity of our students. To ensure the success and inclusion of our diverse learners, differentiation is embedded in all aspects of our classrooms “maximiz[ing] learning by considering students individual and cultural learning styles” (Alberta Education, 2005a, p. 1). ‘May The Forest Be With You’ unit plan, has varying differentiation through the lessons. Each lesson offers supports, which are designed to meet the students current learning needs. CAST (2011) provides the following three guidelines for the successful implementation of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework – to provide multiple means of 1) representation; 2) action and expression; and 3) engagement.

The lessons are designed to be multi-modal in nature, incorporating a variety of technologies and experiences to maintain student engagement. Further, students are encouraged to showcase their learning in the final performance task through their preferred means. We encourage educators to adapt to the needs of their class and use these differentiation ideas if it supports learning in your classroom.
