Summative

Summative assessments are strategically placed throughout the unit, with a final self-directed research-based assessment focusing on the “cumulative results of learning” (Alberta Education, 2009, p. 124). Students are introduced to the final summative assessment at the start of the unit plan fostering understanding of the objectives of the study. The final summative assessment is designed to allow for multiple means of representation, allowing students to “apply key concepts [and] demonstrate their knowledge and skills in ways that are authentic” (Alberta Education, 2009, p. 124). The unit plan is strategically designed and incorporates small summative assessment tasks periodically, scaffolding student knowledge and skills. The summative assessments purposefully connects to desired curricular outcomes and demonstrates authenticity through allowing students to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. Also, students are afforded the opportunity to provide feedback regarding the assessment rubric, allowing the task expectations to be well understood thereby promoting success.
