The Saturday evening Cheese & Wine group.
By week 3 were were well into a routine. Each morning at 07h00 I would go to the local beach, swim 500m to the rocky outcome and snorkel, regardless of the weather. I would return to the villa, take a dip in the pool and then have a light breakfast. We would then plan for the day which would be influenced by our Saturday evening social gathering. If the wind permitted, I would head to the Poste Lafayette beach for 2 hours of Kite Surfing lessons. What a life!
On Sunday 31 Jan '15, we decided to have lunch at the La Demeure Saint Antoine Restaurant that occupies a beautiful old colonial home from the 1770's and includes a Bed & Breakfast. The menu was in French so we had to get the waiter to explain the menu. Prices ranged from Rs180 to Rs420. The setting was fantastic and the food was great - What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

One of the tea gardens we enjoyed stopping at when driving to / from Grand Bay was the Endemika le Cafe Nursery.
Ghekkos are as common on the Island as they are along the KZN South Coast.
Another favourite snorkeling site I found was in Blue Bay with crystal clear water. One must be mindful of boats when out in the bay.
On one of our trips to Centre de Flacq the Hindu Festival had started with villagers dressed up and carrying the local temples of worship. The Hindu festival participants walk from their home on the Island to the Holy Lake in the centre of the Island to celebrate this festival.
On Wednesday 4th Feb '15 we visited Aigrettes Island Nature Reserve that requires a boat ride from Mahebourg on the mainland. Was passed a number of Fishermen out in the bay applying their skills. The Island includes life size bronze statues of the long neck tortoise and Dodo that are both extinct. The tour included a visit to the bird sanctuary.
After our visit to the Aigrettes Island, we drove back to our home along the scenic Eastern coastal road.
On Saturday evening during our cheese and wine social, our neighbor, the Vice President of Mauritius, offered her 3 body guards to take us on a walk through their training area in the Black River Gorge. Jon and Marie-Claire, our other neighbors would join us. Lynne packed sandwiches, snacks and drinks for the group into my rucksack. On Thursday 05 Feb '15, the guards picked us up from the villa and drove us to the start of the Black River Gorge hike. The driver would pick us up at the end point.
Every now and again it would drizzle to cool us down, but also made the descents and ascents slippery.
The descent was steep and slippery so Vivian, one of the guards, assisted Lynne along the way.
A view of the South West Coast.
Reached the end of the trail.
Enjoying the sandwiches and snacks.
Small pool on top of a waterfall.
This is a great hike that took about 3 hrs. We really appreciated the support and friendliness of the security guards who accompanied us.
While waiting for the vehicle to pick us up, we did some stretching exercise.
This is not a dangerous hike and if we knew the route, we could have done this on our own, however it would have been a challenge getting back to the starting point to collect our vehicle.
