We flew from OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg to Sir S Ramgoolam Airport in Mauritius, arriving at 14h45. This provided plenty of time to take an Airport Transfer to our temporary home located at Edbel Villas in Poste Lafayette for the next 6 weeks.
We thought we would travel around Mauritius via the local bus service as this would ensure we met the locals and could enjoy the countryside while travelling around. During the first week we travelled to Centre de Flacq and Grand Baie. On day 4 we decided that bus travel was very slow and what takes 45 minutes by motor vehicle, takes as long as 2,5 hrs by bus. Also, the locals using the bus service do not speak English that makes conversation very difficult. We therefore took a bus to Grand Baie and secured a small lease vehicle from GBC Car Rentals.
The Villa rental included the services of a local lady who helped clean the house and cook. She did not speak a word of English so Lynne would use her phone to translate English to French. We informed her that we do not require her to do any cooking. She appeared disappointed and later on we found out that they cook enough food to take some home to their family.
We stayed in the right-hand side Villa. Our neighbor was the Vice President of Mauritius who had a permanent security detail with her.

We frequently travelled to Centre de Flacq as it was only 15km away for banking and shopping. We also visited the flea market in Centre de Flacq.

The beautiful Court House in Centre de Flacq.
The week before we arrived, the tail end of a cyclone hit Mauritius that resulted in a lot of sea debris being washed up onto the beaches.
The Villa was located about 150m from the beach. I therefore went snorkeling every morning that included a 500m swim out to a rocky outcrop that was home to a variety of sea life.
As a general rule we stayed away from the larger cities as we do not find them very appealing.
We drove along the coastal road to Grande Baie for site seeing and to familiarize ourselves with the area.
We visited Port Louis Waterfront and the Flea Market.
We also visited the Belle Mare Golf Course and Beach where I enjoyed a snorkel along the shallow reef.
The beautiful church setting at Cap Malheureux is certainly one of my favourite settings.
The Hindu Temples are colorful and beautiful. This one is in Port Louis.
