The work below was created in my sophomore year of college in a character design class. I was tasked with taking a character from a pre-existing television series or film and create two separate redesigns of the character for animation. To the side I have reference images from the series I selected as well as my initial thought process.
Below are some of my initial sketches working out what aspects I wanted to keep from the first season and what I’d change to better match the second season within one of the two designs. I chose to make the first design resemble a season two variant of a character who wasn’t in the second season. The other one would resemble the styling of the first season of the original show.
These were the two designs I came up with for this specific character. The one on the left is the one I’m most proud of because It isn’t just the original character drawn out. I threw in elements from the design of the second season, but also added elements from outside of the series. For example, the inverse color scheme was inspired by the character’s mattel action figure where the color scheme was inaccurate to the series. I also added a beard which resembles the actor as he appeared later in life. The rightmost design was more of a style change of the original character as opposed to a completely unique interpretation, like my leftmost design. The rightmost one is also slightly more exaggerated and cartoony.
After the two designs were completed. We were assigned to pick our favorite of the two and create turnarounds as well as show the character in dynamic poses.
