Can You Understand?

This piece was made for an Experimental Animation course during my junior year of college. We were tasked with taking inspiration from screenings we had during the course and putting our own spin on those ideas. For this assignment I was inspired by Oskar Fischinger’s animated music films, as well as Jordan Belson’s “Allures”. For the film I animated visuals to the 1973 song “Can You Understand?” by the band Renaissance. I wanted to create something that felt like It could jump straight out of the 1960s or 1970s. Therefore I created the visuals completely in after effects before adding film grain and rendering out. This added a bit of jankiness to the movement resembling the title sequences of Saul Bass, while also having the influences listed earlier.
