2018
Two theories on the two lines shutting down early:
1. The other two lines were along the brook and most likely pulling more ground water (however, sugar content actually went up to 1.5%)
2. I changed tees and drops in the two lines that kept flowing and did not in the two that shutdown. I believe this was the reason and lost
about 250-300 gallons of sap or 4-5 gallons of finished syrup. I will be replacing all drops and tees next season and will be using clear
check valves instead of adapters with stubby spouts.
3/23 perfect weather returned on the 22nd 25-26 at night and upper 50s during the day however, only the two
roadside lines are running. Checked the other two for leaks and clogs and found nothing - 3/16" lines are ful
l and just barely dripping, no bubbles and drop lines are full almost back to the taps. 7 out of the 12 taps
on bags have stopped as well. Taps are moist but not dripping. Very strange?
3/17-3/21 - only 90 gallons over 5 days everything was pretty much frozen high temp of only 34 at the trees.
3/18 Outstanding small batch 66.6 brix and 65 on the color crystal clear and outstanding flavor. Sap did not run so
everything is boiled off and washed the pan out - ready for the next run.
3/16-3/17 very cold but sap was running - squirrels have been chewing the bottom line - 3 leaks in 2 days.
3/13 Another Winter Storm! syrup was 70 color and 67.0 brix good flavor
3/9 - back to lighter syrup 64 - 67.3 brix
3/7 & 3/8 - Big Winter Storm 12-14" of snow
3/7 - 67.1 brix & 59 color - outstanding taste (best so far this year)
3/4 - made really dark syrup 21 but outstanding flavor and crystal clear.
3/3 - pulled all tanks back to the house and washed with bleach and warm water.
3/1 - syrup had outstanding flavor - great batch
