A pregnancy lasts 40 weeks counting from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). Viability is defined as the ability of the fetus to live outside of the uterus. This is generally defined as 24 weeks and beyond. A full-term fetus can survive outside of the uterus without any assistance; this is usually beyond 37 weeks. Preterm infants will usually need some type of extrauterine respiratory assistance ranging from ventilatory support to oxygen supplementation.

Term: 37 weeks 0 days through 40 weeks 6 days
