Complications in the newborn may be found prenatally or occur after birth.   Infants with a known condition will often have a plan of care delveloped before birth.  Infants who have conditions that are found after birth will need speedy interventions to avoid their health status deteriorating.  Often these newborns will receive care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); prompt and thorough assessment of newborns that become ill while in the mother/baby unit and timely transfer will alleviate deterioation of conditions to babies who are transferred to the NICU.
