Standard 1 - Teaching Diverse Students - The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, lingusitic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
Description of Artifact: This is a PowerPoint presentation that I created and presented for my Introduction to Exceptional Children course. I researched methods for teaching students who have deaf-blindness. I focused on two research-based teaching strategies for deaf-blind students in my presentation. In the presentation, I analyzed the benefits and challenges of each teaching strategy. Additionally, I provided and explained examples of how to effectively implement each teaching strategy. I made my presentation engaging by providing listeners with an outline, as well as facilitating an interactive demonstration of the teaching strategy, partial participation.
Connection to the Standard: This artifact connects to Standard 1 Knowledge Indicator 1G) "understands how to identify individual needs and how to locate and access technology, services, and resources to address those needs." I identified the needs of deaf-blind students and researched effective research-based strategies to incorporate in the classroom to meet their needs. Additionally, I researched the resources and materials that would be necessary for each teaching strategy.
What I Learned from this Artifact: I learned the definition of deaf-blindness, as well as the needs of deaf-blind students. I also learned two teaching strategies, community-based instruction and partial participation, and how they could be implemented in the classroom to enhance deaf-blind students' educational experiences. Furthermore, I learned the benefits and challenges of implementing each teaching strategy.
Description of Artifact: This is a fifth-grade science lesson plan that I wrote and taught during my novice teaching experience. I taught the students about how energy moves through an ecosystem.
Connection to Standard: My lesson plan connects to Standard 1 Performance Indicator 1J) "differentiates strategies, materials, pace, levels of complexity, and language to introduce concepts and principles so that they are meaningful to students at varying levels of development and to students with diverse learning needs." In order to differentiate instruction for my students' diverse needs, I assigned two ELL students to each work with two partners instead of one when creating their posters in order to provide them with additional support from peers. I also decided not to require research to accommodate two students with IEPs. The visual aids were visible throughout the lesson for below level students to refer to. For a student with a 504 plan for anxiety, I checked in with the student during activities, and I wrote the instructions on the white board for them to refer back to.
What I Learned from this Artifact: I learned how to teach an effective science lesson that accommodates a wide range of student learning needs.
