Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery - The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
Description of Artifact: These are the instructions for two educational math games that I have assigned my students to play during my student teaching experience. I learned about these games from my cooperating teacher. Students would play these games with a partner, and they used their fraction tiles. For the first game, Uncover, students would cover their whole fraction tile with two one half fraction tiles. They rolled a fraction die and decided on their move based upon equivalent fractions. They could only remove a piece from their whole if the fractions were equivalent. They could also exchange equivalent fraction tiles. The winner was the first person to remove all of the fraction tiles from their whole fraction tile. For the second game, Cover Up, students rolled a fraction die and placed the corresponding fraction tile on their whole based on the fraction they rolled. The winner is the first person to cover the entire whole fraction tile. For both games, students checked their partner's work before taking their turn.
Connection to Standard: This artifact connects to Standard 5 Knowledge Indicator 5A) "understands the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning." I was familiar with my students' cognitive processes for learning about the values of fractions, as well as the concept of equivalent fractions. I knew that my students benefited from utilizing fraction tiles as a visual aid. These games were compatible with all of the students' different learning styles.
What I Learned from this Artifact: I learned that these two educational math games help students better visualize and comprehend the concept of equivalent fractions. These games are helpful to students of varying levels.
Description of Artifact: This artifact is a math lesson on adding fractions with like denominators. I wrote and taught this lesson during my student teaching experience.
Connection to Standard: This artifact connects to Standard 5 Performance Indicator 5I) "uses multiple teaching strategies, including adjusted pacing and flexible grouping, to engage students in active learning opportunities that promote the development of critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and performance capabilities." I included flexible grouping in this lesson. During independent practice, some students solved problems independently, while others needed small-group support. I provided additional small-group instruction and practice to below level students at the back table. Above level students completed challenge problems after finishing the independent assignment. Other students completed i-Ready math activities on their Chromebooks after finishing the independent assignment.
What I Learned from this Artifact: I learned how to design flexible grouping that supports all students' learning needs. Additionally, I learned how to keep all students engaged and actively working on a meaningful task while I am working with a small group of students.
