Fourth Field Experience: St-Edmond High School
Feb to Apr 2023
During my last field experience, I conducted an extra-curricular activity at lunch with students. We created Sitcom Club, which happened about once a week. The goal of this activity was to allow students to eat their lunch in my classroom while they enjoy a light hearted TV show, in English. When I decided to do this extra-curricular activity, I was hopeful that students would be interested in watching Sitcoms, as they are fun to watch in my opinion. However, at our first Sitcom club meeting, the students present expressed that Sitcoms were not really a part of their interests, and that they enjoy Sci-Fi and action shows more. Presented with this dilemma, I pivoted my expectations and asked students what TV show they would enjoy watching. They all spontaneously suggested The Mandalorian, a TV spin off of the Star Wars franchise, a cinematic universe I am not at all familiar with. Even though Sitcom club took a turn I was not at all expecting, I discovered a new universe introduced by the students, and grew to like the show and the genre.
On the left, you can see the poster I created to inform students of my club, which I put up on my classroom door. Even though the club did not remain a Sitcom club, I kept the same poster as it still represented my initiative to engage with the school community.
Third Field Experience: Georges P. Vanier Elementary School
Aug to Dec 2022
Throughout my field experience, I worked with my Cooperating Teacher and other members of the school team to create a collaborative learning experience for the students to create a cohesive education plan. To do so, I consulted with the members of the school team and adapted the topics I was teaching to relate to what my colleagues were also teaching. As an example, I related grade five mathematics to the topic of patterns in language.
In addition, I participated in various activities with my colleagues to further develop the educational orientations of the school spirit. I helped organize the Halloween dance to fundraise for the grade six graduating trip to Ottawa. I attended the Conseil d’Établissement to assert the interests of the ESL teachers at the school. I created my own robotics club after school.
Finally, I participated in the implementation of individualized education plans in my classroom. I collaborated with the professionals around the school and the homeroom teachers to find the resources necessary to implement individualized education plans. As an example, I guided students through the use of a Chromebook. Once they were familiar with the device, they were able to use those to complete evaluations. This especially helped my students with special needs.
The picture on the left was taken at the Halloween dance fundraiser for the grade six graduation trip to Ottawa. My Cooperating Teacher and I attended, dressed as Velma from Scooby Doo and Angry Bird respectively. During the dance, I helped set up and take down the gymnasium, direct students and parents to the right places and assure the security of all present. This was a fun evening and one of the highlights of my field experience!
