Third Field Experience: Georges P. Vanier Elementary School
Aug to Dec 2022
As soon as I arrived in my host school, I noticed that there was a sense of community among the students and the staff. The values of friendship, cooperation and community were apparent in the interactions within students, with their teachers, and among all employees. It was important for me to approach this community in a respectful manner, while still showing my willingness to be a part of this strong team. This is why I expressed my interest in being involved and participating in the school initiatives, but I waited to be invited to specific events to lend a hand. Nevertheless, I was quickly invited to participate in these initiatives and got the chance to demonstrate these values and represent those on behalf of the school. By doing so this way, I respected the roles and responsibilities of the people involved in my host school’s community, while also demonstrating that I am a good student teacher and a great addition to the team.
At all times during my field experience, I did not engage in any gossiping or discussing private matters with individuals that were not involved in the certain situation. I made sure that any piece of information that was given to me as a part of my responsibilities as a student teacher stayed for myself. This way, I avoided any form of discrimination and maintained a transparent attitude towards my students, my colleagues and the community.
Finally, I acted vigilantly when I dealt with situations, especially with students demonstrating non-compliant behaviour. I made sure that the situations were dealt with confidentiality to protect my students’ reputation and dignity. I also assured that my interventions were adequate and had proof to justify my decisions.
