Throughout my time completing my Bachelors degree at McGill, I have committed a number of hours of my free time to my professional and academic development, outside of courses and field experiences. The following artifacts are a few examples of these.
The Education Undergraduate Society of McGill University
As I mention in my 'All About Me' page, I have served on the EdUS as Vice-President of Academic Affairs and as President. I not only cherish my time on the EdUS, it is also one of my proudest accomplishments in my extra-curricular involvement. This opportunity has given me valuable experience in leadership, from which I have learned important skills that will serve me for the rest of my career.
SPEAQ on Campus
SPEAQ is a government mandated organization that supports advancements in the field of teaching English as a second language in Quebec. Every year, SPEAQ organizes a two day conference for all ESL teaching professionals and future teachers. Furthermore, the organization seeks out ESL student teachers to organize SPEAQ on Campus, a mini version of the SPEAQ conference. As President of the EdUS, I was asked to head the organizing committee that put SPEAQ on Campus together, on February 12th, 2022.
In addition, the committee requested that I give a workshop. I decided to develop a workshop on the importance of cultural identity development in the ESL classroom. I was very proud to be asked to share my experience on the subject and to present alongside professors that I admire.
Queen's Conference on Education
On February 5th and 6th 2022, a team of EdUS representatives attended Queen's Conference on Education. During this conference, I attended a variety of workshops touching on pedagogical subjects, such as sexual education curriculum, the use of physical movement in the classroom, and student motivation.
Even though this conference had to be held online, I enjoyed my experience and broadened my understanding of pedagogy.
iMPACTS
Under the direction of McGill professor, Dr. Shaheen Shariff, I have had the opportunity to work for the research project iMPACTS, since my second year at McGill. This project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), aims to address sexual violence on campus through evidence-based research, and find sustainable solutions against sexual violence. To learn more about this project, follow this link. https://www.mcgill.ca/definetheline/impacts
As an undergraduate research assistant on this project, I have assisted other researchers on projects address a number of topics related to sexual violence, such as gender-based violence, cyberbullying, sexual education curriculum, queer pedagogy, and many more. In addition, I have written articles for the official project blog. You can find those below.
