On February 22, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides across 150 countries celebrate World Thinking Day—that’s one big celebration!
Promoted by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts(WAGGGS for short) along with Girl Scouts of the USA, World Thinking Day originated in 1926. That’s when delegates from around the globe met at Camp Edith Macy—now called Edith Macy Conference Center—in New York State and agreed that February 22 would henceforth be known as a special day for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide.
Backed by 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in locations worldwide, World Thinking Day 2020 celebrates the diversity, equity, and inclusion reflected in our global movement. Check out our activity guides below to explore this theme—and celebrate being part of the diverse global sisterhood that is Girl Guides + Girl Scouts!
Every year, a troop in the Marina Service Unit hosts our WTD event in which participating troops choose a WAGGS country to represent.
Our event begins with a Parade of Flags and a troop performance, in which the scouts decide a skit or song that represents their chosen country. (The performance is optional)
Scouts dress in "costumes" from their represented country, make a poster with information about their country AND about fellow scouts in the country they are representing (scouts are called "Girl Guides" in many WAGGGS countries), and even have a cute country stamp with which they stamp the "Passports" the attendees receive to mark their visit!
Hosting troops also have have sample food, sweets or a typical drink from their represented country. (Just a bite or a sip - there are many countries represented and the food adds up!)
Lastly, troops are asked to provide an activity or craft for their visitors to do while they "visit" your country, and this is typically some type of S.W.A.P. These need to be easy for very young girls to do (lots of attendees are Daisies and Brownies) and they should not include any gluing or painting that needs to dry. Glue sticks, glue dots, Sharpies and markers are your friend here!
World Thinking Day is always one of the most anticipated and enjoyed events of the year for the girls in the Marina Service Unit.
For: All Levels to attend - typically 2nd year Brownie and above host countries.
