The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student 6 growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
This is an Informal Reading Inventory that I assessed a 6th grade student with level 1 reading. I used markings to show what words the student got right and which ones they missed. After assessing the student, I used the provided chart to determine the "student performance levels" and "identify learning targets" (7J). I determined that the student's independent reading level is actually kindergarten, which is very low for the student's grade. This is important because once I knew what reading level, I could modify instruction and materials to fit the student's reading level. I learned how to use an Informal Reading Inventory and I plan on using it in my future classroom to determine independent reading levels.
This is a comprehension quiz on the story, "The Curious Garden". I created it with Google Forms, so that I can go back and see what the students know. Google Forms is one of many "appropriate technologies to conduct assessments, monitor performance, and assess student progress" (7O). I like Googles Forms because it is easy to make and get results. This quiz is important because it was the summative assessment for the Unit. I got inspiration from a quiz that I found, and I modified the questions to best support the students. I learned that multiple choice is the best option for teaching students with SLD. Short answer is too hard for the students because it is a challenge to put their thoughts into words. It is much easier to provide multiple choice questions with images as an added visual.
I taught a third-grade small group at a Kindergarten reading level. At the end of the Unit, I used the Official Unit Test to assess what the students know. Through this test, I have grown in my understanding of assessments and "evaluating how students learn and what they know and are able to do in order to meet the Illinois Learning Standards"(7B). I walked through the instructions and marked all the words that were missed pronounced or spelled. This is important because the test shows me what the student knows from Unit 3 and if the student is able to continue to the next Unit. I learned that summative assessments are important and you can't prompt them during the test. The student asked me to help them find the first letter of a word, but I told them I couldn't help. Without prompting, the studnets show me what they know and what they need help with.
